Position Overview

The Sr. Data Engineer will play a pivotal role in designing, implementing, and maintaining data pipelines that process and analyze large volumes of instrument data, clinical biomarker inputs and patient information. The Sr. Data Engineer work will directly contribute to the development and deployment of novel diagnostic tools. This role requires a strong technical foundation, experience in startup environments, and the ability to navigate the complexities of regulated industries such as those overseen by the FDA.

Key Responsibilities

Following are the major results needed for the role. Additional responsibilities, tasks and duties will be assigned and required as needed.

  • Design and develop Extract- Transform – Load (ETL) processes to efficiently manage data from various sources, including instrument-generated data, clinical biomarker inputs, and patient information.
  • Create and maintain scalable data infrastructure from scratch, ensuring data is clean, accessible, and ready for analysis by downstream applications.
  • Ensure that all data processes comply with industry regulations, including FDA guidelines, maintaining the highest standards of data integrity and security.
  • Document data processes, pipelines, and infrastructure. Communicate complex technical concepts to non-technical stakeholders to ensure alignment and understanding across teams.
  • Work closely with scientists, instrument software engineers, and other stakeholders to understand data requirements, ensuring that data pipelines meet the needs of all users.
  • Identify opportunities to enhance data systems, improve performance, and reduce costs, implementing best practices in data engineering and architecture.
  • Work independently, but contributions impact the overall team's objectives. Influences some of the overall project goals. Is a collaborative team player and demonstrates open-mindedness and flexibility. Creates innovative and creative solutions to keep projects on-track and to determine the best practice for new assignments. Pays particular attention to existing resources and makes recommendations for efficiencies. Maintains a high degree of quality in all work performed. Experience, Education, and Skills Required

Below are the minimum skills, formal education, certifications or training, and practical experience required to perform the general functions and duties of the role.

  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Data Engineering, Bioinformatics, or a related field. Advanced degrees are preferred but not required depending on experience
  • 8+ years of experience in data engineering, preferably in a startup biotechnology company building novel molecular assays for bachelor degree, 6+ years of experience for advanced degrees.
  • Advanced Expertise in SQL, Python, and ETL tools. Experience with cloud platforms (e.g., AWS, GCP, Azure) and data warehousing solutions in highly desired.
  • Strong understanding of data requirements in regulated environments, including familiarity with FDA regulations and best practices for data handling in clinical contexts.
  • Demonstrated ability to build data solutions from scratch, including designing scalable pipelines and systems in a fast-paced, startup environment.
  • Excellent communication skills, with a proven ability to collaborate with cross-functional teams and translate technical requirements into user-friendly solutions
  • Consistently demonstrates technical proficiency and developing innovative solutions. Anticipates and provides solutions for obstacles and challenges. Regularly collaborates with others in suggesting valuable solutions. Works on complex problems in which analysis of situations or data requires an in-depth evaluation of various factors. Exercises judgment within broadly defined practices in selecting methods, techniques and criteria for obtaining results. Collaborates cross-functionally, may lead a team or project.
