About The Role & Team

eBay's Buyer Experience engineering team is looking for an outstanding Staff Back-End Engineer to work with as we redefine the face of eBay. You’ll be working with a world class team of engineers, designers, product managers, and analysts to create great products that make a difference on one of the world’s most trafficked and loved websites.


The ideal candidate has a deep understanding of building large scale applications, low latency API’s, data pipelines, and a high focus on capability oriented architecture. As the lead engineer you will be responsible for aspects of the software lifecycle: design, development, testing and experimentation.


What You Will Accomplish

  1. Own a large functional area within the product, possessing in-depth knowledge and expertise.
  2. Influence across domain teams and guide others towards the right technical decisions.
  3. Improve team productivity by identifying and evangelizing opportunities for productivity improvements.
  4. Identify areas in the team applications likely to change and integrate flexibility in the design for these areas improving engineering velocity.
  5. Practice evidence-centered design making features testable, ensuring high quality and improving velocity in continuous delivery.
  6. Manage project features, break into sub-tasks, identify and resolve issues for efficient execution.
  7. Identify gaps and issues across systems and functional areas, propose solutions, build the engineering roadmap, and drive resolution.

What You Will Bring

  1. Bachelor's degree; 10+ years related experience (or Master's and 8+ years related experience or PhD and 6+ years experience).
  2. 8+ years of experience with proficiency in multiple programming languages (Java/Kotlin) and frameworks (Spring/Springboot), with deep mastery in one or two specific languages/frameworks.
  3. Experience in proposing and influencing technical strategy & roadmap, balancing short/long term wins is preferable.
  4. Design and build scalable, distributed and highly available systems, ensuring high-performing, responsive website and accessibility.
  5. Familiarity with shift left approach is a plus.
  6. Experience taking a lead role delivering complex software systems.
