The Engineer, Principal, Technology is responsible for planning, conducting, and supervising engineering design reviews and analysis assignments involving larger, critical projects or multiple projects. These projects require the competent application of conventional knowledge in a particular field of engineering or scientific field. Project work may be broad in nature requiring ingenuity and cross-functional coordination.

What You Will Do:

  • Maintain active awareness of technical, business, and management developments affecting present and potential customers and communicate this information promptly to senior level managers.
  • Serve as Account Manager to designated customers and actively promote the services and capabilities of ABS throughout the business community.
  • Provide day-to-day leadership of Engineering staff. Assign projects to Engineers/Senior Engineers and monitor the progress of all assigned projects. Ensure the delivery of high quality service and maintenance of good customer relations.
  • Develop suggested Rule changes and/or Rule development projects as assigned. Advise staff in matters related to the application of Rules and Regulations.
  • Advise managers of short- and long-term manpower needs to ensure qualified, trained technical staff are available and identify associated training needs.
  • Appraise the performance and development potential of subordinates.
  • Assist in the development of qualification statements, proposals, and bids; make presentations of these materials to prospective clients when necessary.
  • Ensure accurate billing to clients in a timely manner.

What You Will Need:

Education and Experience:

  • Graduate from University (A or B, and C) and a minimum of 15 years of related industry experience.
    • For those with Hull backgrounds:
      • B.S. degree in Civil, Structural Engineering, Naval Architecture, Ocean Engineering or related disciplines; an M.S. is preferred.
      • Demonstrated computer literacy in engineering software.
      • Exposure to Finite Element Method (course work or supervised research).
    • For those with Machinery backgrounds:
      • B.S. degree in Marine, Mechanical or Electrical Engineering or related disciplines; an M.S. is preferred.
    • For those with either Hull or Machinery background:
      • Preference for graduates from a marine-industry recognized college or university.
      • Good command of the English language.
  • Experienced Engineer from Industry (A or B):
    • Hull:
      • Professional or chartered engineer license.
      • Minimum 15 years of related engineering experience in a shipyard, design/consulting office, shipping/oil company, or classification society; or a minimum of three (3) years as an ABS Senior Engineer II.
    • Machinery:
      • Minimum 15 years of related engineering experience in a shipyard, design/consulting office, shipping/oil company, or classification society; or a minimum of three (3) years as an ABS Senior Engineer II.
      • Seagoing engineering license or professional/chartered engineer license.
    • Extensive previous experience in the aforementioned tasks.
    • Skilled in developing computer solutions for Engineering, HRIS, Financial, or CAD.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Expert on multiple tools, technical platforms, techniques, etc.
  • Understanding of the methodology of program development.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Knowledge of relational and hierarchical database management systems.
  • Qualified in the design and maintenance of computer systems.
  • Data analysis and modeling.
  • Proven ability to instruct others.
  • Demonstrated ability to work well with others.
  • Ability to obtain a working knowledge of the ABS Health, Safety, Quality & Environmental Management System.

Reporting Relationships:

The incumbent will work closely with a senior level Manager regarding day-to-day activities, such as status/scheduling of work, setting priorities, sales initiatives, etc. Direct reports to the incumbent will be members of the engineering or technical staff and office support staff.
