General Summary:

Senior Materials and Processes (M&P) Engineer with expertise in design and support of composite and bonded airframes. Experience with material qualification/equivalency, fabrication, cure rheology, secondary bonding, repair techniques, non-destructive testing (NDT), finishing, test methods, certification methodology, statistical analysis, project management, and Material Review Board (MRB) actions.

*This is a Contingent position with our company (1-year or longer)*


Duties & Responsibilities:

  1. Creates, maintains, interprets, and applies M&P specifications
  2. Reviews and approves engineering drawings for M&P requirement
  3. Process development and quality control of composite fabrication and bond processes
  4. Creates FAA material qualification/equivalency test plans and test results reports
  5. Directs material qualification/equivalency test programs
  6. Performs statistical analysis of data from material test programs to generate design allowables or determine material equivalence
  7. Supports Production MRB and Service Center liaison actions for M&P discrepancies
  8. Supports composite fabrication suppliers, test houses, Procurement, and in-service aircraft
  9. Interacts with suppliers of parts, assemblies, and materials
  10. Travels as required for M&P issues


Education, Work Experience, Certification and/or Licensure:

  1. BS and/or MS Mechanical, Chemical, or Materials Engineering
  2. 8+ years of directly related engineering experience with a minimal of 5+ years within Materials and Processing Engineering
  3. Previous experience interfacing with the FAA Certification Branch and Certificate Management Section is a plus
  4. Current or prior FAA Designated Engineering Representative (DER) for non-metallic and/or metallic M&P is a major plus
  5. Current or prior MRB authority a plus


Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

  1. Strong technical writing skills for specifications, standards, test plans, and test results reports
  2. Excellent listening, written and oral communication skills
  3. Proficient computer skills with MS Office, CMH-STATS, HYTEQ, TeamCenter, and SAP
  4. Proficient at interrogating 3D engineering models in CATIA V5 for details and assemblies
  5. Proficient at applying M&P requirements on engineering drawings for composite and hybrid composite-metallic structures
  6. Knowledge of other M&P specialties (metallics, sealants, finishes, paints, etc.) is a plus
  7. Ability to comprehend and apply FAA regulations, technical guidance and requirements for composites and bonded structures during type certification and production phases of an aircraft program
  8. Ability to perform statistical analysis of data from material qualification test programs and generates design allowables and material specification values
  9. Knowledge of NDT techniques used on composite materials and structure is a plus
  10. Knowledge of MRB actions for M&P discrepancies
  11. Knowledge of physical testing and mechanical testing of composite materials and structure
  12. Ability to mentor and/or lead less experienced engineers and technicians


Physical Requirements:

  1. Incumbents may be routinely exposed to equipment operational noise heat-cold-dust, and/or aircraft equipment, parts, or fuel odors.
  2. Incumbents may be required to stand, sit, squat, walk, bend, climb ladders, move, reach, or stretch for prolonged time periods with no restrictions, as required by job duties.
  3. Work in a safe and professional manner while adhering to all regulatory requirements (FAA, OSHA, DOT, EPA, State, and Federal regulations, etc.).
  4. Read, hear, speak, and see with no restrictions, as required by job duties.
  5. Comprehend and adhere to management directions and/or safety instructions with no restrictions.
  6. Effectively communicate in Business English language.
  7. Pull, push, carry, lift, or move items up to 10 lbs. throughout the work shift without assistance, as required by job duties.
  8. Pull, push, carry, lift or move materials/people/items/equipment weighing up to 50lbs or more during the work shift, with the use of Company provided “reach assistance technology”
