The Medtronic Diabetes Group Research and Development department is looking for a Senior Sustaining Electrical Engineer. In this exciting role, you will support all sustaining activities for the Pump and Sensors products. This will include EOL, creation and support of test fixtures, and support for manufacturing and production issues. To be successful in this role, you must have a good working knowledge of PCB design, layout, and manufacturing processes as well as understand PCB assembly line operation, optimization, and troubleshooting. You will collaborate with Medtronic Engineering, Quality Assurance, and CMs to optimize high volume designs for exceptional quality, low cost, and efficient production. You will participate in DFM/DFA reviews to ensure that designs are implemented in a way that is consistent with CM capabilities and are producible with high yields.
A Day in the Life
Responsibilities may include the following other duties as needed:
- Proficiency identifying and implementing alternate source electronic component solutions and/or circuit design changes necessary to address design improvement, obsolescence, supply chain easement, etc., of released products.
- Experience performing tests and debug of different products at the circuit board level (majority are hands-on).
- Contributes to and leads development of electrical test systems for Failure Analysis.
- Development of processes to troubleshoot products.
- Supports CAPAs, cost reduction, EOL, and continuous improvement of products.
- Support Manufacturing in troubleshooting operations involving medical devices through assembly and test.
- Provide technical assistance to other functional departments such as Product Engineering, Systems Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Software Engineering, Quality, Reliability, and Manufacturing.
- Act as an interface between PCBA Contract Manufacturers and Medtronic functional groups to schedule, coordinate, and meet design objectives and required project timelines for EOL projects.
- Work directly with CMs and their suppliers to resolve project-related issues and review changes.
- Coordinate with cross-functional organizations (Program Office, Quality, Regulatory, etc.) to prioritize, plan, and execute key CM initiatives.
- Collaborate with manufacturing, operations, and engineering functions to troubleshoot and resolve manufacturing issues, and facilitate transition of manufacturing activities to the operations group.
- Provide guidance to engineering on design concepts and specifications that best utilize CM equipment and manufacturing techniques.
- Assist suppliers with manufacturing process and tooling development.
- Assist engineering with design releases.
- Comply with all standards and exercise regulatory compliance requirements such as FDA QSR and ISO 13485.
- Review manufacturing processes, procedures, and production layouts for assemblies, equipment installation, processing, machining, and material handling.
- Review arrangement of machines within plant facilities to ensure the most efficient and productive layout.
- Assist the Quality Assurance team with CM inquiries, audits, FAs, and corrective/preventive action activities.
- Ensure CM processes and procedures comply with applicable regulations.
Must Have: Minimum Requirements

Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering or other science-related discipline with 4+ years of engineering, product development, or R&D experience.
OR
Advanced Degree in Engineering or other science-related discipline with 2+ years of engineering, product development, or R&D experience.
Nice to Have
- 8+ years of electrical engineering experience.
- 5+ years experience in project management of PCBA Contract Manufacturing.
- Strong communication skills.
- Background in medical device industry.
- Previous experience with EOL or sustaining activities.
- Solid understanding of PCB schematic capture, layout, materials, and board stackups.
- Strong background in high volume PCB assembly line processes and operations.
- Experience user of Microsoft Office tools including Project.
- Experience using document control software such as Agile.
- Experience with regulated manufacturing industries.
- Working knowledge of Altium CAD design suite.
- Lean Six Sigma experience.

The provided base salary range is used nationally (except in certain CA locations). The rate offered is compliant with federal/local regulations and may vary by experience, certification/education, market conditions, location, etc.
