SeKON is seeking a Systems Engineer to join our innovative team, supporting the National Institutes of Health (NIH), specifically the National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA) in Rockville, MD. Under the guidance of the Senior System Engineer, the Systems Engineer will perform a variety of tasks to ensure the smooth operation of both Linux and Windows server environments. The ideal candidate will have practical experience with Red Hat Linux, Oracle Linux, or Windows Servers and hold relevant certifications such as RHCE or MCTS to demonstrate technical proficiency.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • System Administration & Maintenance: Perform day-to-day administration of the IRMB server environment, including monitoring, troubleshooting, and updating systems.
  • Server Configuration & Deployment: Configure, manage, and maintain Windows Servers and Red Hat Linux/Oracle Linux
  • User Support: Provide technical support to users, ensuring issues are resolved efficiently.
  • Security Management: Implement and maintain security policies and procedures for system environments to safeguard data and network integrity.
  • Technical Documentation: Prepare and maintain documentation for system configurations, changes, and operational procedures.
  • Backup and Recovery: Manage backup solutions to ensure data is properly secured and develop recovery plans for critical systems.
  • Performance Optimization: Monitor system performance and suggest optimizations to improve efficiency and minimize downtime.
  • Collaboration: Work closely with the Senior System Engineer and other IT team members to align technical operations with organizational needs and the requirements outlined in the Statement of Work (SOW).
REQUIREMENTS:
  • Bachelor's Degree in Information Technology, Computer Science, or a related field.
  • 3+ years of hands-on experience in system engineering or system administration within a Red Hat Linux/Oracle Linux or Windows Server
  • OR: A total of 6 years of IT experience, with at least 3 years focused on system engineering or system administration in both Linux and Windows
  • Red Hat Certified Engineer (RHCE) or Microsoft Certified Technology Specialist (MCTS)
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Experience with virtualized environments and cloud computing platforms.
  • Familiarity with storage solutions and backup/recovery processes.
  • Strong understanding of networking protocols and security best practices.
  • Experience supporting federal government projects or working within similar regulated environments.
