Job Summary
The City of Fort Collins is searching for a Senior Network Engineer, who will serve as a key technical leader responsible for designing, implementing, and maintaining robust and scalable network solutions. Leveraging your extensive experience and expertise in networking technologies, you will provide strategic guidance, mentorship, and technical direction to the network engineering team. You will collaborate closely with other IT teams and business stakeholders to ensure that the network infrastructure meets the evolving needs of the organization. As a member of a 4-8-person network team, the Senior Network Engineer will be responsible for all lifecycle phases (Acquisition to Retirement) of network solutions and components across the organization. The role involves fieldwork at facilities throughout the city as well as in non-city facilities of our business partners, as needed to meet the needs of the city's mission.
A qualified candidate will have a degree in computer science, information technology, or a related field, or equivalent work experience. A bachelor's degree is preferred but not required. A highly qualified candidate would bring at least seven years of experience that includes communication, collaboration, and leadership skills.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
The following duties and responsibilities are illustrative of the primary functions of this position and are not intended to be all inclusive.
  • Performs complex evaluation, diagnosis and resolution of network problems.
  • Upgrades network hardware and software components as required.
  • Designs, analyzes and manages enterprise network including installation, maintenance, and security of LAN/WAN.
  • Plans and designs local and wide area data and voice (converged network) communications connectivity.
  • Manages routing and switching configurations changes as part of day-to-day operational support or planned/engineered changes
  • Maximizes network performance by monitoring performance; troubleshooting network problems and outages; scheduling upgrades; collaborating on network optimization. Documents network problems and resolution for future reference.
  • Participates and leads projects as needed in various network projects in the areas of project engineering, scheduling, equipment upgrades and copper or fiber optics installation.
  • Researches, evaluates and implements new technologies and network management tools.
  • Establish technical standards and ensure adherence to them for product development
  • Prepares bid specifications, develops requests for proposals or requests for information.
  • Works with selected vendors in pricing, technological needs and data/voice communications equipment requirements
  • Participates in cross organizational and inter-departmental teams.
  • Performs as project manager, as required
  • Translate customer requirements into feasible solutions and work with teammates and cross-functional teams to design, plan, communicate, and implement those solutions
  • Provide technical support to technicians.
  • Responsible for taking on-call duty, on a rotating basis, with a 30-minute onsite response to the work location

Required Knowledge Skills and Abilities
  • Knowledge of and experience with the following: Advanced network protocols/features like L3 VPRNs (MPLS), VPLS, Classes of Services, IPSEC/GRE tunnels, Internet BGP load balancing, and OSPF Transport and access technologies including Carrier Ethernet, DWDM and GPON VoIP technology and industry standards such as SIP, COPS, TRIP, SCTP and MGCP including PSTN call routing, preferred IPv6, IPv4, DHCP, DNS, NAT, and QoS.
  • Knowledge of LAN/WAN design and architecture
  • Proficient in layer 2 and layer 3 switching and routing
  • Knowledge of data, voice, video, and wireless communication.
  • Ability to work with multiple data communication protocols and knowledge of data communication hardware and software.
  • Ability to analyze vendor supplied software or hardware for feasibility and practicality.
  • Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing, and to clearly and understandably communicate technical information to both technical and non-technical audiences.
  • Ability to work successfully in a public government team environment.
  • Excellent customer service skills.
  • Knowledge of network and cabling theory and applications.
  • Experience with Cisco, VMWare and UCS servers preferred.
Required Qualifications
Minimum Preferred
College degree or equivalent work experience. Some positions may require functionally related certification or advanced degrees
Bachelor's degree in computer science, CIS, data communications or related field from an accredited four-year college or university
Experience Requirements
  • Five to seven years of related experience; or equivalent combination of education and experience
