Summary:
Uses the application of mechanical engineering principles to provide efficient, effective, economical and timely solutions to product and process development. These can range from small component designs to extremely large plant machinery or vehicle projects.
They may also be required to direct design responsibilities of designers and drafters.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities include the following. Other duties maybe assigned:
- Concepts machine designs for management and customer approval.
- Creates models and drawings of products and machinery that conform to company and ISO standards.
- Completes analysis necessary to complete the design.
- Generates images and renderings of products for marketing.
- Generates BOMs, order list, etc. necessary to complete a job.
- Directs designers and drafters assigned to their projects on design and order of creation.
- Aids the shop in part creation and assembly.
- Assist customers with questions about design or installation of a product.
- Generates manuals, installation sheets, and product tech sheets.

- Knowledge of design techniques, tools and principals involved in production of precision technical plans, blueprints, drawings and models.
- Have a working knowledge of ALSPI productions system to identify what parts are in the various stages of design/construction.
- Ability to track progress of the product and report problems with design or scheduling.
Qualifications Cont.:
- Ability to track progress of the product and report problems with design or scheduling.
- Knowledge of different types of engineering documents (drawings, ECNs, BOM etc.)
- Knowledge of Office software such as Excel, Word, Outlook, etc.
- In depth knowledge of CAD systems and programs including 2D and 3D parametric modeling software.
- Solid engineering knowledge of machining processes, EDM, laser cutting, forming, and welding.
- Advanced design knowledge of work cell type and functions, including Robotic, index tables, walking beam, conveyor, palletizers, etc.
- Knowledge of which coatings to use to prevent corrosion or wear; powder coat, anodizing, paint, galvanizing, etc.
- Basic analysis capabilities including structural, and thermal.
- Ergonomic design skills and knowledge of the standards.
- Knowledge of ANSI, ASME, and API design standards.
- Ability to read and understand alpha numeric numbering systems
- Ability to create instructions and guidelines.
- Technical writing skills for creation of manuals.
Education and/or Experience:
- Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or equivalent with classes in parametric modeling
- 5 years’ experience designing consumer products or industrial machinery in utilizing parametric modeling software.
Language Skills:
- Knowledge of the structure and content of the English language including the meaning and spelling of words, rules of composition and grammar.
- Strong organizational and communication skills (verbal and written).
Mathematical Skills:
- Ability to apply advanced geometry, trigonometry and calculus.
- Ability to manipulate and write formulas.
Reasoning Ability:
- Ability to make common sense design decisions.
- Ability to assess a product's function and alter the design accordingly.
- Ability to decide when a product could be dangerous or does not match design criteria and bring it to management’s attention.
Certificates, Licenses, Registrations:
- Certificates and/or basic training on parametric modeling software are required.
- Certificates of membership to the Society of Manufacturing Engineers (desirable).
- Certificates that relate to BOMs, Office filing systems, Project Management, Quality training (desirable).
