We have an exciting opportunity for a Senior Orbital Debris Radar Engineer to join our team with JETS II teammate company, Nexus Solutions.

This position will work on the JETS Orbital Debris Research team supporting the NASA Orbital Debris Program Office, a delegated program under the Office of Safety and Mission Assurance at NASA HQ. This senior level role will serve as a key debris research engineer, leading the effort to better understand the orbital debris environment through radar observation measurements. The selected applicant will:

  1. Work closely with our NASA customer's Orbital Debris Program Office and provide technical and scientific leadership.
  2. Utilize knowledge of radar theory and practical applications to support characterization of the space debris environment using the Haystack Ultrawideband Satellite Imaging Radar (HUSIR), the Goldstone bi-static radar and other large radar systems, including signal processing and analysis to determine characteristics such as radar cross section (RCS) and orbit information.
  3. Actively work on new initiatives involving both hardware and software development, including investigating potential capabilities of additional configurations and/or sensors.
  4. Support laboratory radar measurements to facilitate orbital debris model updates.
  5. Help to expand on and forge new relationships with those in the radar community, e.g., MIT Lincoln Lab, the military (USSF, USAF, USN), and other civil and international agencies.
  6. Routinely present work products and results in both written and verbal form to JETS colleagues, the NASA customer, and through NASA publications and conferences.
  7. Work with the JETS radar lead, the NASA customer, and across other interdisciplinary teams to analyze and develop understanding of the debris environment.
  8. Perform other duties as required.

CLEARANCE REQUIREMENTS:

  • Proof of U.S. Citizenship or US Permanent Residency may be a requirement for this position.
  • Must be able to complete a U.S. government background investigation.
  • Management has the prerogative to select at any level for which the position is advertised.

EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS:

  • A BS degree is required, and a master’s or higher degree with a minimum of 10-15 years of experience is typically required.
  • 5 years of experience working with radar signal processing and measurements data.
  • Experience utilizing radar theory in the development and analysis of radar systems.
  • Experience developing signal processing algorithms for radar applications, with emphasis on Radar Cross Section (RCS) determination and characterization.
  • Possess excellent oral presentation and analysis reporting skills.
  • Experience with high-level programming and analysis languages, such as Fortran, MATLAB, and/or Python.
  • Experience with the software development process.
  • Must meet eligibility requirements to receive and maintain a Department of Defense (DoD) security clearance.

PREFERRED:

  • BS degree in astronomy, planetary sciences, or other related field from an accredited college or university and 10 years of experience in the field or in a related area - or - Masters or PhD in astronomy, planetary sciences, or other related field from an accredited school with a focus on fields related to remote sensing.
  • Master's or PhD in engineering from an accredited school with a focus on fields related to remote sensing.
  • 10 years' experience working with radar and signal processing systems.
  • Proficiency using radars/data of the US Space Surveillance Network (SSN).
  • Experience analyzing low signal-to-noise measurements.
  • Experience with statistical analysis.
  • Expertise with experiment design related to radar observation.
  • Experience with high-level programming and analysis languages, such as Fortran, MATLAB, and/or Python.
  • Experience with the software development process.
