Dewberry’s vibrant Raleigh, NC office of ~200 design professionals includes a large Building Services Group focused on providing design services to major public and private clients in North Carolina and Virginia. Building Services Group work is broad and varied. Projects you can expect to work on are K-12 schools, Universities, Community Colleges, State-owned facilities, Correctional, Municipal and some commercial projects. The Building Services Group is subdivided into large existing Mechanical, Electrical, Plumbing, Structural, Technology (MEPST) technical departments each led by department managers. The electrical department manager will be very proficient designing building and site electrical, normal, and standby power, lighting and controls, fire alarm, UPS, and telecom systems.
Due to our growing backlog, we’re seeking an experienced Electrical Department/Discipline Manager , who will be responsible for knowing how to do the electrical work committed to in proposals and assigning / leading electrical staff to get the job done. You will assist Project/Client Managers by providing engineering resources – a design team - to help meet the client’s desires and budget. Duties would also include some involvement in direct MEP sales and assisting with sales efforts for multidiscipline projects. In short, provide the design/engineering resources and guidance to accomplish our commitments. Experience with North Carolina and Virginia State Construction Offices’ requirements is a plus. You will report to Dewberry’s Chief Electrical Engineer.

Responsibilities
Electrical Department/Discipline Manager will provide the following to their team to effectively and successfully complete projects:
- Growing, mentoring, and developing department staff to allow each person to achieve their maximum potential.
- Minimum annual evaluations for each direct report.
- Technical and Quality oversight of all project work for department.
- Establishing/improving department standards.
- Adherence to project design schedules.
- Notification to Project/Client Managers if established project design schedule cannot be met.
- Adherence to department project budget. Review and provide updates on project budgets at milestone dates. Reviewing discipline budgets weekly.
- Attention to project scope during the design process to identify potential additional services.
- Identify department staff performing design of the project, along with a senior staff and EOR as required.
- Provide general updates of projects (status in the process, tasks to complete, percentage complete currently, etc.)
- Identify milestone dates when each discipline should provide information, at each phase, to allow sufficient time to good design coordination.
- Provide 'on-the-spot' advice and decisions, technical and cost estimates.
- Coordination with all disciplines involved, including outside consultants.
- Work schedule for discipline showing:
- Organizing staff in a way to allow career advancement, professional development, quality client service, and operational efficiencies to meet business and project financial goals.
- Taking a very active role in recruitment of staff in discipline area including networking, recruitment, interviewing and “deal closing”.
- Simply put – Discipline Managers control all production resources and all commitments. Conversely – accountability for our deliverables comes from Discipline Managers.
Required Skills & Required Experience
Accomplished (15+ years’ experience) Professional Engineer; knowledgeable of construction process, familiar with AIA and state construction contracts; self-motivated with highly developed verbal, written and interpersonal skills. Experience in staff management/department management. Experience in the design of various MEP systems, and an understanding of document preparation utilizing a BIM/Revit platform. Well organized, takes good notes. Good conceptual understanding of plumbing, mechanical and electrical systems with general knowledge of system operation, space requirements, and cost.
