Software Engineer – Computational Electromagnetics and Photonics

Metalenz is at the forefront of driving innovation in optics with metasurface technology, providing solutions that redefine the possibilities of mobile imaging and sensing. Metalenz is the first company to bring metasurfaces to mass markets, with millions of its meta-optics already integrated in consumer devices, combining the functionality of three or four complex lenses and components into a single flat device, mass-produced in existing semiconductor foundries.

The Company’s latest product, Polar ID, is a groundbreaking imaging sensor solution that can see what no other sensor can see, enabling secure and affordable face unlock for all smartphones. This system-level solution harnesses the unique capabilities of metasurface optics together with machine vision algorithms to bring a new form of sensing to mobile devices for the first time.

Metalenz is built on foundational research from Harvard University, and backed by venture arms of Intel, 3M, TDK, and others.

The Position

Metalenz is developing next-generation sensing systems for consumer electronics with metasurface technology. As a photonics engineer, you will help advance and support the design of our products in imaging and non-imaging optical technologies. A successful candidate will be able to write software to run electromagnetic simulations, design metasurface structures, and interpret and analyze the results.

What you’ll do

  • Apply your knowledge of computational electromagnetics to design problems at Metalenz
    • Run large scale electromagnetic simulations for metasurface devices
    • Analyze and interpret results from simulations
    • Document and report to stakeholders the outcomes of experiments
  • Use heterogeneous scientific compute platforms, building code to deploy across workstations, clusters, or GPUs
  • Use improved full-wave electromagnetics solver algorithms, optimization techniques, and surrogate analysis methods
  • Collaborate by writing documentation, engaging in code review, and commenting on design documents

What you’ll need

  • BS with three years experience or MS in Physics, Applied Physics, Applied Mathematics, Electrical Engineering, or relevant field and/or demonstrated excellence in relevant technical domains through open source contributions or publications
  • Technical background in computational electromagnetics, numerical computing, and optimization
    • Physics-informed neural networks (PINNs), surrogate modeling, scientific machine learning, and modern developments in solving partial differential equations, particularly Maxwell’s equations
    • Optimization techniques and their application in electromagnetics
  • Comfort working with high-performance computing environments, especially Julia and cloud compute platforms such as AWS, or willingness to learn
  • Familiarity with Python, MATLAB or commercial/open-source E&M software such as Lumerical, CST Studio, or MEEP encouraged
  • Experience working with Linux workstations and SLURM clusters desired
  • Familiarity with software engineering best practices (version control, cluster management, data provenance, code profiling and unit tests)

What we do

  • Work with consumer electronic OEMs to commercialize metasurface optics
  • Design next-generation optical systems for emerging consumer applications like 3D sensing
  • Apply a modern software stack and cutting-edge developments in computing to greenfield areas in optical system design
  • Support internal fabrication and metrology with custom in-house software
