Engineering-Chief Engineer FT/Variable

JOB SUMMARY: To lead and supervise the daily performance of staff engineers. Perform preventative maintenance and urgent, corrective and routine repairs in electrical mechanical and H.V.A.C. equipment. Assist Director in matters of performance reviews and discipline. Chief Engineer shall assist the Director in maintaining an effective organization, administering monetary controls, budget development, planning and training of personnel in their general and specific duties, safety and effective management.

PERFORMANCE DIMENSIONS AND TASKS
Essential Function:

1. Provides direction to assigned personnel.
2. Oversees the requisitioned, corrective, emergency and preventative maintenance of buildings, equipment and off-site facilities associated within MMHS.
3. Reports daily to the Director as to the general condition of MMHS facilities and the general progress of work being accomplished.
4. Reviews maintenance requests and schedules work tasks for staff engineers checking to see that they are properly executed within a reasonable length of time. This includes requisitioned, corrective and emergency maintenance. Ensures that work sites are left clean and that tools are returned to Maintenance Shop. Makes periodic inspections, noting general condition and keeps the Director informed as to the needs and/or changes required to keep MMHS in safe, well maintained condition.
5. Orders selected stock items such as plumbing supplies, wood, electrical and equipment parts so as to maintain maximum efficiency levels at all times according to established procedures.
6. Performs requisitioned, corrective, emergency and preventative maintenance of electrical distribution, mechanical, H.V.A.C., power generation, plumbing, and medical gas systems and building structures as required. Responsible for inspecting, calibrating, adjusting, lubricating and repairing or replacing components as necessary. Maintains records of maintenance repairs. Chief Engineer will respond or assist in all emergency repair calls.
7. Diagnoses system malfunction on mechanical and electrical equipment. Repairs or replaces defective parts as necessary.
8. Assists in the training of personnel in the operation and repair of equipment.
9. Assists in maintaining records to ensure compliance with state, federal and Joint Commission regulations.
10. Incumbent is prepared to assume responsibilities for the Director in the event of absence, illness or vacation.
11. Directs workers engaged in ground maintenance activities such as mowing lawns, trimming hedges, removing weeds, and raking and disposing of leaves and refuse.
12. Inspects completed work for conformance to blueprints, specifications, and standards.
13. Studies production schedules and estimates worker hour requirements for completion of job assignment.
14. Interprets MMHS policies to workers and enforces safety regulations.
15. Establishes or adjusts work procedures to meet production schedules.
16. Suggests changes in working conditions and use of equipment to increase efficiency of work crew.
17. Analyzes and resolves work problems, or assists in solving work problems.
18. Initiates or suggests plans to motivate workers to achieve work goals.
19. Helps Director in maintaining time and production records.
20. Confers with supervisors to coordinate activities of individual departments.
21. Maintains age specific safety precautions including:

• No small or sharp object or tools that may injure pediatric patients or visitors will be left out.
• Elderly – Adequate lighting will be maintained for good visibility. Hallways and pathways will be free of debris, equipment, tools and liquid spills.

QUALIFICATIONS

Education: Must have a bachelor’s degree in engineering or equivalent combination of experience/education.

Work Experience: 2+ years of full-time maintenance experience. 1-year supervisory experience desirable. Prefer background in Hospital or industrial maintenance.

Skill Requirements: Ability to work well with others. Ability to read, comprehend, and follow complex technical instructions. Demonstrated mechanical and electrical aptitude. Ability to work in accordance with MMHS/engineering safe practices. Able to work swing or night shifts as required. Able to respond to MMHS for emergency calls within 30 minutes while on stand by call. Ability and willingness to participate in continuing education. Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals. Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent and to draw and interpret bar graphs.

Licensing Requirements: Must sign Mee Memorial MMHS Drivers Agreement. Provide Valid California Driver License – upon hire and prior to expiration. Provide Current DMV Record – upon hire and annually during anniversary month. Provide Proof of California mandatory limits of liability motor vehicle insurance – upon hire and prior to expiration.

Language Requirements: English – Written and Verbal.

Physical Demands: Lift 35 pounds unassisted. Stand for 2 hours, climb ladders, work at heights over 8 feet. Crawl through and over obstructed and highly reduced clearance areas. Manual dexterity to manipulate tools required to effect repairs. Must be willing to work around high voltage, electrical equipment, hot water and steam lines in hot, cold and wet conditions.
