Job Requirements / Description

At Interstellar Lab, our mission is to build a future full of life, on Earth and beyond. We believe in a future where technology enables humans to live in harmony with nature, where biodiversity thrives and expands, and where terrestrial life becomes multi-planetary. To build this future, we design, manufacture, and operate controlled-environment biofarms that unleash the power of plants, both on Earth and in Space. Our solutions combine Hardware, AI, and Bioscience, using controlled-environment technology to mimic conditions that allow plants, fungi, and microorganisms to grow faster and better. On Earth, we are pioneering molecular and bio-farming, boosting production of nutrients, metabolites, and bioactive compounds in plants while providing a sustainable and safe source of plant materials. Our customers include large beauty, perfume, natural ingredients, food & beverage, and nutraceuticals companies. To advance space exploration, we work with space agencies and private companies, providing them bio-farming units to efficiently grow food for astronauts and conduct research on the impact of microgravity on plant molecular composition.

YOUR ROLE

Interstellar Lab is seeking a talented and experienced Avionics Engineer to join our team dedicated to advancing space exploration and sustainable living through closed environment agriculture, food production, and plant research hardware in space. The ideal candidate will be responsible for the design, development, testing, and maintenance of avionics systems that support our innovative solutions for sustainable living in extraterrestrial environments. This role requires a deep understanding of aerospace engineering, electronic systems, and the ability to work in a dynamic, fast-paced environment.

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Lead Avionics Design and Electrical Interface on space exploration payloads and facilities (ISS, Orbital Stations, and Lunar program).
  • Provide critical peer review and approval of electrical designs during design reviews, and of acceptance and qualification test campaigns.
  • Perform engineering design evaluations.
  • Fabricate and assemble new product development.
  • Work directly with other engineers to achieve a common design that meets the assigned schedules.
  • Develop avionics systems throughout all stages of integration, from production and test to launch and operation.
  • Troubleshoot issues on prototype and production assemblies.
  • Develop, execute, and document the avionics system verification on flight and flight-representative hardware at the system level.

PROFILE

  • Bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering.
  • 10+ years of experience in avionics development.
  • Experience with ISS payload development and interface.
  • Strong understanding of computers and programming languages (Python, C/C++).
  • Demonstrated ability to work in a highly cross-functional role.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Master’s degree in electrical engineering, computer engineering, or similar engineering degree.
  • Fluent in French, Italian, German, or another language.
  • 2+ years of professional experience rapidly designing and delivering highly reliable products.
  • 2+ years of electronic product experience designing hardware from concept through production; strong emphasis on full life cycle development of new hardware products and not small incremental updates to legacy hardware.
  • 2+ years of professional experience testing, troubleshooting, and debugging electronics.
  • 2+ years working on aerospace systems.

WORKING CONDITIONS

  • Extended hours and weekend work may be required to support critical project and mission milestones.
