The Marine Field Service Engineer, Propulsion (FSE) plans and executes complex field technical assignments with minimal professional guidance involving installing, commissioning, modifying, testing, inspecting, and repairing ABB marine products and equipment, including, but not limited to: ABB propulsion marine products and equipment, including Azipod® propulsion motor & rotor, hydraulic and electrical steering units, ASU servo units on steering systems, ACS6000 steering drives, data transmission upgrades, radial bearing condition monitoring, water sealing systems, and slewing bearing systems. Read and interpret marine engineering drawings and schematics, both electrical and mechanic, and troubleshoot and repair failed marine equipment. Ensure ABB meets customer commitments and expectations and recommend measures to improve operations and customer service. Represent company at conferences and meetings with customers. Prepare and provide input for technical documents such as specifications, quotations, procedures, or technical reports. The Marine Field Service Engineer may also coordinate work with other groups to ensure meeting customer commitments. Since the FSE is often the one who interacts with the customer’s operations personnel, they may also recommend measures to improve operations and customer service.


Key Elements of This Role

  • Works independently to install, modify, test, repair, or inspect company products and equipment including, but not limited to; marine propulsion products and equipment, including Azipod® propulsion motor & rotor, hydraulic and electrical steering units, servo units on steering systems, ACS6000 steering drives, propulsion retrofits and upgrades, radial bearing condition monitoring, water sealing and slewing bearing systems, among others within the propulsion unit.
  • Performs or coordinates complex and diverse engineering activities associated with field projects.
  • Interprets technical drawings and schematics and makes changes as necessary in the field to reflect work carried out on site.
  • Increases product and technical knowledge through factory or third-party training, technical manuals, and conventional or non-conventional resources.
  • Troubleshoot and repair equipment, applying personal knowledge and experience.
  • Provides technical advice to customers on-site and remotely.
  • Works closely with project managers to coordinate site activity. Assume the role of site manager on some smaller projects.
  • Provides leadership in the assembly and operation of lab and field service equipment.
  • Records, compiles, and reduces data for analysis and assists in the subsequent assessment and reporting.
  • Leads assigned field services – responsible for planning, analysis, and reporting of projects ranging in complexity from simple to advanced.
  • Assumes the role of a mentor or an advisor to less experienced company personnel and customers.
  • Ensures quality and safe operations in the field


REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS, SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE:

  • Associate’s degree or foreign equivalent degree in engineering or other technical field and minimum 2 years of experience in marine filed service. Alternately a special combination of education and experience and/or demonstrated accomplishments
  • Customer Focused, Efficient, organized, task orientated person, capable of interacting and communicating with all levels of customer, factories, and internal departments, both verbally and in writing.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills in English and knows how to build commitment within diverse and fragmented environments.
  • Communicate efficiently and effectively in a professional manner on all aspects on service activities.
  • Requires decision making ability with ability to work independently and on own initiative without continuous supervision.
  • Candidates must already have a work authorization that would permit them to work for ABB in the US
  • Analytical and accurate, with attention to detail, ability to plan and follow company strategy.
  • Must be capable and comfortable working within confined spaces to include but not limited to vessels, propulsion systems, Cofferdams, etc.
  • Up to 85% travel required (domestic and international, includes weekends and holidays).


PREFFERED QUALIFICATIONS, SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE:

  • Bachelor’s degree Marine, Mechanical, Electrical engineering, or similar field
  • 5 years of experience in the marine field service
  • Familiarity with marine/offshore work environment and procedures
  • Familiarity with shipyard dry docking activities
  • Knowledge of marine propulsion, power generation and power distribution.
  • Knowledge of marine steering systems (hydraulic & electrical)
  • Experience with confine space entry, work environment
  • Must be able to read, interpret, and design technical drawings and schematics utilizing computer design software (AutoCAD).
