CAD Designer I

Location: Jackson, MI 49201 (Hybrid - 3 days onsite, 2 days remote)

Duration: Contract through 11/23/2025, with a high possibility of extension

Overview:

The Electric Supply Document Management team is responsible for managing Electrical Engineering Records for the Electric Distribution & Generation Operations teams. This includes overseeing records during the execution phase of capital projects, in collaboration with Engineering and Enterprise Project Management. The team also supports drafting services for Engineering and manages the company's Computer-Aided Drafting (CAD) standards. As a key contributor, this team plays a crucial role in delivering on the company's capital investment strategy and maintaining configuration management for the Operations team.

Position Summary:

As a CAD Designer I, you will create new drawings from engineering sketches, incorporate as-built comments on construction drawings, and update Design Change Requests (DCRs) using AutoCAD or MicroStation. While electrical drafting and design experience is preferred, candidates with mechanical and civil drafting backgrounds will also be considered. Most work will be office-based, but some fieldwork may be required.

Key Responsibilities:

Produce designs using CAD software (AutoCAD & MicroStation) within ProjectWise.

Track drafting requests and ensure timely completion in the database.

Perform updates and revisions based on as-built and DCR comments.

Qualifications:

  • Proficiency in AutoCAD and/or MicroStation.
  • Experience in drafting, particularly in electrical design (mechanical and civil experience also considered).
  • Familiarity with ProjectWise or similar project management systems.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
  • Valid driver's license.
  • Willingness to perform fieldwork, including travel to remote sites, in varying Michigan weather conditions.

Preferred Skills:

  • Experience in electric utility environments.
  • Familiarity with CAD standards and best practices.
  • Demonstrated experience using ProjectWise.

Safety & Travel Requirements:

  • Ability to perform duties safely at all times, including traveling to and from field sites as needed.
