Immediate opportunities are available in the Portland, Oregon metro area for talented, motivated systems engineers to design, develop, and test a variety of avionics products including Head-Up Display systems, helmet mounted display systems, vision systems, and innovative new display products geared toward the commercial, corporate, and military aircraft markets. With an emphasis on product quality, we are developing systems which bring improved value to the flight deck through enhanced situational awareness, lower operating minima, and added safety benefits. From being the Head-Up Display provider for the Boeing Dreamliner to the Helmet Mounted Display provider for the F-35 Joint Strike Fighter, Collins Aerospace continues to build trust every day.

Our Systems Engineering team is responsible for overall vision system, head-up guidance, and helmet display system requirement definition, including the definition of interfaces with other aircraft systems, the definition of desired functionality (including display formats and behaviors), and the verification and validation of the correct implementation of these defined characteristics, as well as LRU system definition and qualification. This role will initially work under the direction of a Lead Systems Engineer on one or more development programs and will be involved in the preparation of system-level verification procedures and the execution of those procedures. Growth to a lead engineer position is encouraged.

This role will be onsite in Wilsonville, OR. Relocation assistance is available.

What You Will Do:

  • Characterize, test, and develop algorithms for optical systems

  • Identify system-level requirements and prepare system specifications, system descriptions, wiring diagrams, interface control documents, and sub-assembly requirement documentation

  • Provide conceptual design to foster decomposition of the system requirements into lower-level requirements; working collaboratively with a hardware engineering design team to develop functions into their design states

  • Prepare and participate in system design reviews in accordance with MIL-STD-1521, or similar internal process

  • Develop system integration cases and procedures of optical components and sub-assemblies

  • Develop and perform verification testing of optical components and sub-assemblies

  • Create traceability artifacts from system functional requirements

  • Create and present systems and optical content for all design reviews, both internal and external

  • Seek to identify possible problems presented in applicable projects that may cause a delay or exceed budget and contribute to finding appropriate solutions

  • Work within a multidisciplinary team to bring products to market

  • Work under the guidance of a Lead Systems engineer

  • Data collection and analysis to prepare technical reports of findings and recommendations

  • Algorithm development for characterizing optical display performance

  • Optical, electrical, and mechanical hardware integration

  • Requirement development to meet customer needs and create the best product possible

  • Design, development, and production of augmented reality display systems for inflight use

Qualifications You Must Have:

  • Typically requires a degree in Science, Technology, Engineering or Mathematics (STEM) unless prohibited by local laws/regulations and minimum 2 years of prior relevant experience or an Advanced Degree in a related field or in absence of a degree, 6 years of relevant experience

  • U.S. Person (U.S. citizen, permanent resident, or granted refugee or asylee status) as defined here:

  • Experience with requirements definition and verification, including interface definition and a basic knowledge of physics, electrical, mechanical, structural, and/or optical design

  • Must be willing to travel 10% or as needed

Qualifications We Prefer:

  • Military avionics deployment and testing

  • Hands on experience performing optical tests in a lab environment

  • Display testing experience

  • Augmented Reality display systems experience

  • Proficient with MATLAB

The salary range for this role is 64,000 USD - 128,000 USD. The salary range provided is a good faith estimate representative of all experience levels. RTX considers several factors when extending an offer, including but not limited to, the role, function and associated responsibilities, a candidate’s work experience, location, education/training, and key skills.
