POSITION SUMMARY:

The position is responsible for leading the Engineering and Operational Excellence (Process and Equipment Reliability and Continuous Improvement). This position will manage the company’s capital program and lead the portfolio of major capital projects from concept to commissioning. The project engineering, process and equipment reliability and operational excellence resources will directly report to this position. In addition, this position will take the lead and be responsible for the development of design standards, project engineering management practices across the company while elevating and accelerating our agenda as it pertains to Reliability and Operational Excellence. The role will be accountable for managing key engineering contractor relationships in cooperation with Procurement and be the liaison with Process R&D, Procurement, and engineering resources at the sites. The role will include developing and implementing process technology and design improvements that drive efficiencies, capacity and productivity.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Create and execute against a game plan for the Engineering and Operational Excellence group that is aligned with the Global Supply Chain strategic plan goals and objectives.
  • The person in this position will systematically and methodically deliver positive results as it pertains to Capital Project management and execution. Will advance and accelerate our agenda in the areas of Process Reliability, Equipment Reliability, Process Optimization and Lean and Continuous Improvement.
  • This position will be vital in the implementation and advance of our Reliability and Operational Excellence Roadmap that stretches over the SC Strategic Plan horizon.
  • Globally recruit, train, develop, and supervise the Corporate Process and Engineering resources.
  • Conceive, design, build, and deliver major capital projects safely, on time, on budget and functionally meeting the project scope while maintaining a high benchmark for capital project performance.
  • Develop creative project execution strategies in conjunction with procurement, legal, and others to deliver cost effective projects globally.
  • Leverage Lean and Continuous Improvement to delay or reduce the dependency of capital investments.
  • Collaborate with Manufacturing Operations and S&OP (Planning) to reduce equipment bottleneck, drive productivity blitzes, improve capacity and maximize network equipment and process flexibility.
  • Coordinate company functional groups on timing and resources for project execution.
  • Recommend and provide technical direction and input to continuous improvement projects. Must be the Subject Matter Expert for Lean and CI.
  • Establish centers of engineering knowledge and project management for the key Balchem processing. Develop equipment and process design.
  • Develop the multi-year company capital plan and priorities.
  • Lead the development of the annual capital budget and track execution.
  • Integrate with R&D on technology developments and translate into designs and projects to deliver the product or benefits intended.
  • Provide financial estimates for early stage business projects for decisions.
  • Develop critical minimum design standards for key Balchem processes.
  • Establish a standard project work process and train appropriate personnel.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • BS Degree in Engineering with a functional knowledge of chemistry or biology.
  • Minimum of 15 years of experience in capital project management in the chemical, food or pharma industry.
  • Minimum of 10 years of experience in project management in food or pharma projects.
  • Held the Project Manager position for single projects greater than $50 Million.
  • Qualification Preference: Chemical or Mechanical Engineering Degree; Graduate technical degree is a plus.
  • International experience in Capital Project execution and Operational Excellence deployment.
  • Experience in managing a portfolio of capital projects greater than $30 million.
  • Site management, plant management experience desired.

WORKING CONDITIONS:

  • Work is partly sedentary and partly involves climbing, standing, walking, for extended periods at plant or remote sites, elevation, and where uneven conditions or where construction and operation activities are occurring.
  • Travel will be necessary, which could include 50%+.
  • Responsibilities will be performed in various weather conditions and temperatures.
  • Will be required to wear appropriate PPE such as safety glasses, safety shoes, respirators, gloves, and other protective equipment as required by the specific job assignment.
