Position : Senior Substation Engineer


Location : Phoenix, AZ (REMOTE – Must reside in Arizona)


Summary :


  • Looking for an experienced Substation Engineer with knowledge in Substation Physical and Controls design and experience in Project Engineering to work with the Substation Transmission Engineering team
  • The successful candidate will join a group of other experienced Substation Engineers to execute capital projects at the Transmission Voltage Level throughout the state of Arizona
  • Record growth in the Transmission sector entails new Extra High Voltage (EHV) interconnections and large customer-driven projects
  • Experience with MS Excel and Primavera P6 is preferred
  • This position is Remote, with occasional onsite work as needed, in Phoenix, AZ


Key Responsibilities :


  • Prepares engineering plans, designs, analysis, specifications, cost estimates, evaluations, studies, technical reviews, investigations and verifications
  • Complies with design, regulatory, operating and maintenance requirements
  • Ensures engineering analyses, design, project control, schedule commitments, or oversight work is technically sound, cost effective, and in compliance with established standards, codes, and regulations
  • Checks and reviews analysis, evaluations, and investigations of others
  • Interfaces with customers and other departments to ensure project objectives are understood and that work scope meets customer requirements, budget and schedule
  • Contacts customers and various levels of management to obtain or present technical data
  • Presents the results of designs, studies projects (in terms of new techniques) or approaches to subordinates, colleagues, management and customers
  • Enhances department performance and productivity and/or unit performance by formulating, coordinating, performing analysis and making recommendations for improvements
  • Provides technical assistance and guidance to department personnel to enhance department performance and productivity
  • May provide oversight of engineering technical programs by managing the program requirements, working with cross organizational partners, reviewing and internalizing operating experience and coordinating corrective actions to ensure engineering program elements continue to remain healthy
  • May assume responsibility for small- to medium-scale projects, which include planning, designing, scheduling and coordinating all facets of the project
  • Identifies potential schedule or quality problems and initiates corrective action
  • Takes initiative to eliminate barriers and uses resources to ensure desired results
  • May interface with outside agencies and regulatory authorities
  • Provides technical guidance and leadership to less experienced engineers
  • May participate in developing long-range strategies for significant site problems
  • Provides input to projects and recommends modifications to increase operating efficiency and/or reviews design and documentation of projects to ensure compliance with design specifications, schedules, and any regulatory requirements
  • Remains cognizant of current technology and engineering developments as well as industry and competitive developments


Qualifications :


  • 5+ years of experience in Engineering-related positions
  • 5+ years of Substation Physical & Controls design experience
  • Independently drive Physical and Controls designs for electrical Substations throughout design and construction phases (both new construction and upgrades/retrofits)
  • Oversee design of extra high, high, and medium voltage electrical Substations
  • Oversee the production of one-line diagrams, conceptual designs, plan-section drawings, foundation, grounding, specifications, schematics, wiring diagrams, and any additional drawings needed to complete a comprehensive set of construction documents to build Substations of varying sizes and voltages
  • Work amongst a cross-discipline design team, owners, and contractors to develop drawings and specifications
  • Coordinate with external vendors, design firms, internal design teams, and manufacturers
  • Major equipment selection
  • Develop estimates and refine scope of work from sponsors
  • Experience with MS Excel and Primavera P6 is preferred
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering or a related discipline is preferred; equivalent real-world work experience will be considered
