Position Summary: Perform a variety of engineering work in planning and developing products, tools, fixtures, equipment, and industrial processes.

  13. Initially leads a major project or several smaller projects.
  14. Eventually leads a series of projects or program area.
  15. Defines scope, objectives, vision, and activities of assigned projects based on user needs, and leads project activities.
  16. Coordinates activities of team members working on projects.
  17. Determines scope, budget, and implementation timeframes of assigned projects.
  18. Controls expenses for project and responsible for meeting budget goals and objectives.
  19. Owns the results of projects served and encourages other project participants to own project results.
  20. Understands the financial aspects of projects (resulting value stream profitability) and acts accordingly.
  21. Demonstrates in-depth technical expertise in assigned area.
  22. Knows and applies broad knowledge of principles, practices, and procedures of multiple technical specialty areas.
  23. Assists more junior engineers with the capture of new knowledge.
  24. Advanced mastery of advanced systematic/creative problem-solving tools.
  25. Assists more junior engineers in the use of creative problem-solving tools.
  26. Advanced understanding of lean product development tools and principles.
  27. Has in-depth level of understanding of the business or function being supported and shares this knowledge with others.
  28. Participates in environment of customer and voice of customer activities to influence identification of customer needs/opportunity.
  29. Assures customer needs are central to projects served.

Skills, Abilities and Mastery (Responsibility Matrix):

  1. Identify applicable agency and market needs and define appropriate design specifications.
  2. Support market research.
  3. Perform cost analysis of designs.
  4. Lead the application of lean product development methods and tools in the completion of projects.
  5. Lead the creation of new knowledge and the conversion of new learning into explicit knowledge for others to use.

Product & Process Design and Testing:

  1. Understand customer needs and design new products and processes to serve those needs.
  2. Define and specify product architecture and design approaches.
  3. Propose and develop new design automation tools and systems.
  4. Define test requirements and specify test plans.
  5. Manage agency certification activities for new products (UL, CE, CSA, VDE, etc.).
  6. Conduct analysis and evaluation of competitive products and services.
  7. Develop or revise appropriate safety policies and procedures based on new product/process designs.

Quality Assurance:

  1. Perform technical peer review of new designs and processes.
  2. Approve analyses of failed or returned materials and corrective action plans and procedures.
  3. Define disposition criteria for non-conforming products, materials, and components.
  4. Qualify new sources of products, materials, and components.
  5. Develop and improve relationships with suppliers and subcontractors.

Technical Support:

  1. Train inside and outside sales personnel on product applications.

Coaching / Mentoring:

  1. Actively develop other employees through coaching and feedback, job assignments and rotation, and on-the-job training.
  2. Coach teams on application of the scientific method, systems thinking, creative problem solving, and the development of trade-off curves.

Education, Experience and Certification Requirements:

  1. Advanced degree in field of specialization or Bachelor's degree and related experience, or equivalent experience (5-8 years).
