Join our diverse team of problem solvers as we add new chapters to the history of spaceflight!

Launch Facility Instrumentation and Controls Engineer II

New Shepard is Blue Origin's fully reusable, suborbital rocket system that was built to transport humans and research equipment past the Karman line (100 km/62 miles), the boundary separating Earth's atmosphere and outer space. Our mission is to reduce the cost of access for space travel.

As a Launch Facility Instrumentation and Controls (I&C) Engineer, you will be part of a team of diverse engineering disciplines to design, build, commission and test the ground control and data acquisition systems that support New Shepard operations for mission launch, landing, vehicle recovery and maintenance activities.

Control system applications include, but not limited to, pneumatic storage and transfer systems, cryogenic propellant storage and transfer systems, hydraulics, electro/mechanical systems, weather monitoring, and environmental controls systems. You will be responsible for the design of the instrumentation and control systems for the product lifecycle that includes initial requirements definition through system implementation, final commissioning and ensure that designs meet or exceed technical requirements. You will provide engineering support to launch operations and maintenance teams. This role requires that you know and understand the technical requirements of the ground instrumentation and control systems, that you participate in the development of control system requirements for the hardware and software of the control system definition. You will be expected to be a technically curious, self-driven, and ultimate owner of hardware and software to meet program objectives and timelines. We are looking for someone to apply their technical expertise, leadership skills, and commitment to quality to positively impact safe human spaceflight. Passion for our mission and vision is required!

  2. Develop robust and detailed electrical schematics, bill of materials, instrumentation lists, and PLC logic.
  3. Ownership of the controls systems assigned throughout the complete product lifecycle.
  4. Develop, test, maintain, and configuration control PLC code/logic for the instrumentation and controls (I&C) Ground systems.
  5. Inform project scope definition, task timelines, and order of operations to technical project managers to develop and maintain project schedules.
  6. Understanding the basis of need by dates while delivering system hardware and software on time to meet program objectives.
  7. Draft and process engineering change requests for upgrades and changes to New Shepard Ground Control Systems.
  8. Work with in-house production and maintenance organizations to resolve challenges encountered during procurement and integration of instrumentation and controls (I&C) ground equipment or changes.
  9. Support operations and maintenance teams to resolve anomalies and non-conformances encountered with instrumentation and controls (I&C) ground equipment used to launch, land, and maintain the flight vehicles.
  10. Work with Systems Engineers to ensure that requirements are developed and maintained to accurately define the ground electrical control and instrumentation sub-system.
  11. Develop test plans/procedures and support the integrated testing to ensure systems meet requirements and functions as intended to support New Shepard launch operations.
  12. Perform and support Failure Mode Effects and Causal Analysis (FMECA) and Hazard and Operability (HAZOP) system safety analysis.
