Mechanical Designer / Engineer

Summary of Position:

Alcon is looking to hire a Mechanical Engineer / Mechanical Design to join our Surgical R&D team in Lake Forest, CA. You will be responsible for development of components in a sub-system dictated by R&D as well as performing work and lead technical support staff for completing projects or tasks requested from Simulation and Manufacturing team.

Key Responsibilities:

1. Assure project progress, resolves technical issues, and escalates when needed.

2. Design, develop, and document plastic, die cast, sheet metal, and machine components. and assemblies utilizing Creo Parametric 3D CAD software.

3. Create and manage products or sub-system’s top-down skeleton level architecture to ensure module interfaces and master model is in alignment with Alcon development process.

4. Generating detailed fabrication drawings utilizing GD&T and mechanical tolerance analysis.

5. Recommends fabrication and additive manufacturing processes to meet R&D needs, specifically plastic, die casting, sheet metal, and machine component design.

6. Develop a network of external suppliers and internal resources within the department and across functions.

7. Perform fitment and DFM/A checks.

8. Ensures the integrity and quality of the Group’s output by establishing, maintaining, and enforcing Alcon standards, processes & procedures.

9. Identifies opportunities for improvement in group procedures, and leads initiatives aimed at continual improvement in efficiency & effectiveness of the group.

10. Ensures engineering and company procedures are followed.

11. Mentors, develops, and trains engineers and group personnel in the proper use of Creo Parametric CAD software and top-down design and master model methodologies.

Must haves,

1) Bachelor's Degree + 10-years minimum work experience

2) Proficient using 3D CAD software Creo Parametric modules: ISDX, Simulate, Pro-Process, Sheet Metal, Large tabulation / Family table set up, Mechanism, Pro-Process, include employing top-down design and master model methodology. SolidWorks is a plus.

3) Proficient in Design for Manufacturing (DFM) and Design for Assembly (DFA).

4) Demonstrated experience and knowledge of materials and specifications for: plastic, die casting, sheet metal, and machine parts.

Preferred Qualifications/Skills/Experience:

1. The ability to fluently read, write, understand, and communicate in English.

2. Motivated self-starter. Proven ability to handle multiple assignments simultaneously.

3. Working and collaborating with cross functional teams in a fast-paced R&D environment preferably in medical device space.

4. Familiar with DRM and ANSI Y14.5 drawing standards for completing drawings for machine, plastic, sheet metal, and die cast components, top-level assemblies, and module assemblies. Drawings for Cables and PCBA’s is a plus.
