We are growing our cross-functional engineering team to tackle our next big project, a portable whole-body x-ray imaging system for use in remote locations. Specifically, we need a versatile and motivated Electrical Engineer specializing in switching power supplies to design, build, and optimize high-voltage power supply systems. Role/Responsibilities

  • Reports to VP Engineering
  • Interface with potential users and outside experts to gather information, understand the product use case, then conceptualize and evaluate potential product solutions
  • Designs and develops electrical and computer systems for innovative medical imaging products.
  • Engage in all phases of product development, including problem definition, concept, requirement specification, risk analysis, design, prototype, test, failure analysis, and sustaining engineering
  • Develop and maintain detailed documentation, including electrical schematics, specifications, test plans, and reports
  • Collaborate with mechanical, software, and manufacturing engineering to ensure seamless integration of electrical systems into the overall product design
  • Work with cross-functional engineering team to establish priorities, tasks, and timelines for sustaining engineering and new product development activities
  • Regular reporting on engineering activities and progress
  • Engage with suppliers to find solutions to design problems
  • Perform work and document in accordance with internal operating procedures in compliance with ISO 13485
  • Identify, generate, and document potential intellectual property opportunities


Qualifications and Skills

  • BS Electrical Engineering or similar degree with 5+ years relevant experience
  • MS Electrical Engineering or similar degree with 2+ years relevant experience.
  • Preferred: Experience with medical product development
  • Self-motivated and creative problem solver when presented with conflicting requirements, business demands and technical risks/issues


Design and development knowledge and skills that include:

  • Power Electronics Knowledge: MOSFETs, IGBTs, diodes, inductors, and DC-DC converters (buck, boost, buck-boost, SEPIC, flyback, forward, etc.)
  • Magnetics Design Experience: inductors and transformers for power supplies including knowledge of core materials, winding techniques, and loss calculation
  • Control Theory: control loop design (PID, voltage mode control, current mode control), feedback systems, loop stability, and compensation networks
  • Thermal Management: thermal analysis and design for effective heat dissipation, selection of heatsinks, cooling mechanisms, and layout optimization for thermal performance
  • PCB Layout for Power Systems: layout design for minimizing parasitics (such as inductance and resistance) and ensuring good current flow, grounding techniques (e.g., single-point vs. multi-point grounding), component placement to minimize EMI
  • EMI/EMC Considerations: Understanding EMI/EMC mitigation techniques (shielding, filtering, layout optimization)
  • Component Selection: based on efficiency, reliability, cost, size, and performance characteristics under various conditions
  • Simulation Tools: Proficient with simulation tools like SPICE, LTspice, or PLECS for circuit verification and familiarity with power supply design software, such as Texas Instruments’ WEBENCH or other vendor-specific tools
  • Efficiency Optimization: synchronous rectification, soft-switching techniques, and low-loss components for high efficiency across different load conditions
  • Power Supply Protection Design: overvoltage, overcurrent, thermal protection, soft start, inrush current limiting, and short-circuit protection circuits
  • Regulatory and Safety Standards: Familiarity with industry standards like IEC, UL, or ISO for isolation requirements and creepage and clearance
  • Testing: oscilloscopes, spectrum analyzers, load testers, and other lab equipment for testing; including thermal, EMI, and stress testing
  • Firmware Development: microcontroller-based power supply control and digital power supply algorithms (e.g., digital PID)
  • Analytical Skills: loss, efficiency, and other critical design calculations of transient and steady-state analysis of power circuits
  • Prototyping: Design, build, and test prototypes for rapid verification and validation of designs
