Duties and responsibilities:
Under the guidance of the Regional Safety Director, the Safety Engineer will conduct both routine and complex on-site inspections of private and public sector employers to ensure compliance with Virginia's occupational safety laws and regulations. During a typical day, the Safety Engineer will be responsible for:
• Walking through work sites.
• Observing operations and interviewing staff.
• Identifying and evaluating hazards or code violations.
• Researching and analyzing regulations and complex policy standards.
• Demonstrate the ability to conduct non-complex inspections.
• Identify and evaluate occupational exposures.
• Analyze unsafe practices and workplace conditions to make initial recommendations for case file documentation and preparation.
• Properly using safety testing equipment.
• Testifying in legal hearings as needed.
• Participate in formal/informal conferences on an as needed basis.
Other related skills and experience:
• Effective verbal and written communication skills with a demonstrated ability to compose meaningful and accurate narrative reports and correspondence.
• Practical knowledge and demonstrated ability to use personal computers and the Microsoft office suite of applications.
• Effective time management and organizational skills.
• Ability to establish and maintain excellent interpersonal relationships.
• Ability to interact positively with customers in an inimical environment.
• Ability to properly wear a respirator if required, and to properly use other types of PPE.
• Ability to perform job duties objectively and effectively in scenes where individuals may have sustained serious injuries or death.
Minimum Qualifications
• Experience interpreting, explaining, and/or applying federal or state occupational safety standards and regulations.
• Experience performing work site inspections to ensure compliance with occupational safety regulations.
• Experience recommending controls and corrective actions of safety hazards.
• Experience conducting investigations and/or participating in legal proceedings such as depositions and testifying in court.
Additional Considerations
• Certification in Industrial Safety, Industrial Engineering, Occupational Safety, or closely related field.
• Continuing certification in the areas of occupational safety.
• Bilingual fluency speaking, reading, and writing in Spanish.

Special Requirements:
• Possession of a valid driver's license at the time of hiring or within 30 days of hiring. Position is subject to annual driver's license record check.
• Ability to travel overnight occasionally.
• Ability to respond to emergency calls after-hours on a rotational schedule or as needed.
• Ability to perform moderate physical activity that includes, but is not limited to, climbing stairs and ladders, bending, walking up and down inclines, occasionally lifting and carrying loads up to 30 pounds, etc.
• The selected candidate must pass a criminal background investigation, and successfully serve a 12-month probationary period effective from the date of employment if beginning employment as an original hire or re-employment.
Special Instructions:
The salary range for this position can vary based on the experience level of the selected candidate, commensurate with experience, plus the State's benefits package.
Apprentice: $51,884
Journeyman: $62,732
The agency will not entertain salary negotiations for this position.
This position may be eligible for a sign-on bonus of $1,500 for new employees to the Commonwealth.
