Family Description
Applied R&D (AR) consists of target-oriented research either with the goal of solving a particular problem or answering a specific question, or for multi-discipline design, development, and implementation of hardware, software, and systems including maintenance support. Supplies techno-economic consulting to clients. AR work is characterized by its detailed and complex nature in order to systematically combine existing knowledge and practices to further develop and incrementally improve products, operational processes, and customer-specific feature development.
Subfamily Description
Integration, Verification & Testing (IVT) comprises the integration of software and/or hardware or system components into systems, platform, product releases, or networks and verifies the integrated entity or network against particular requirements and specifications. Covers setup and maintenance of laboratory and associated equipment, tools, and devices.
* Interprets critical internal or external business issues and develops innovative solutions that help to sustain competitive advantage.
* Defines processes and standards.
* Uses knowledge on how the job contributes to the corporate goals as well as knowledge of industry and competitive landscape to increase own effectiveness.
* Influences strategic decisions within the professional area that affect the performance of the subfunction.
* Solves highly complex or novel problems based on sophisticated analytical thought and complex judgment.
* Independently develops concepts to set the professional direction of own organizational unit.
* Acts as a senior subject matter expert, typically at a global or regional level, in many organizational units the most senior internal expert who serves as best practice/quality resource and is an acknowledged authority both within and outside own organizational unit.
* Often leads functional teams or projects with considerable resource requirements, risk, and complexity, handles day-to-day staff management issues, including resource management and allocation of work.
* Manages technical requirements from customers' needs.
* Delivers software/hardware build-controlled productions releases.
* Manages product hardware/software evolutions through the creation and release of hardware/software documentation, hardware/software change control management, supplier and customer notifications.
* Retains technical and design knowledge for assigned products and technologies and provides training to the lower support teams.
* Applies and maintains quality standards.
* Participates in process and tools evolutions and improvements.
* Applies the software care process contributing when needed to the fastest problem restoration.
Impact
Impact is primarily short term and typically functional, departmental, or small single geographic in scope through management of resources. Accountable for departmental/program goals, achievement, and cost performance. Actions and errors will normally impact business, program, project, or function. Marked contribution to defining the direction for new products, processes, standards, or operational plans based upon business strategy.

Resolves unique and highly complex problems within own discipline. Makes decisions about own and/or project work using known solutions as a basis. Managerial/Supervisory: Typically second (occasionally first) level of solid line management. Effective management of resources and development/implementation of plans and processes. Interprets policies and establishes procedures. Increased awareness and influence of other functions outside of own business area. Decision making often repeated in similar manner - able to choose correct solution or modify existing solution.

Knowledge & Experience
Hands-on experience in quality assurance for Layer 2 and Layer 3 networking products.
Hands-on experience in customer engineering and customer support.
Hands-on Network Processor QA experience.
Hands-on experience in customer production support.
Typically requires 10-15 years extensive relevant experience and/or a graduate/postgraduate equivalent degree.
