Job Description - APP, Team Lead-Neuro ICU (3298055)

The Division of Neurocritical Care (NCC), in collaboration with the Neuroscience Intensive Care Unit (ICU), provides 24/7 inpatient care that is comprehensive, compassionate, and technologically advanced patient and family-centered care for critical patients experiencing neurologic injury or illness, including the most advanced diagnostics and treatments, education of future leaders in the field, quality improvement initiatives, and clinical research to develop new therapies. The Neuro ICU utilizes a multidisciplinary care model where attendings, nursing staff, and responding clinicians (including APPs, residents, and fellows) collaborate fully in the care of our unique patient population.

We currently have an exciting opportunity for an experienced APP to join the team as Lead APP. Under the direction of the Associate Medical Director and the Nursing Director of Neuroscience Intensive Care Unit and NCC division leadership, the APP Team Lead is accountable for the delivery of consistent, high quality patient care, promoting the training, competencies, and development of the APP staff, and advancing the APP Neurocritical Care Program.

The APP Team Lead focuses on a targeted area of clinical care delivery within the Division of NCC/MGH. In doing so, this advanced practice leader will partner with the leadership team on activities in the inpatient setting, along with other key physician, advanced practice, and nursing leaders to facilitate efficient and effective clinical operations.

This position is 40 hrs., variable rotating schedule, including night, evening and/or weekend coverage. Time reserved for administrative responsibilities.

  1. Responsible for implementing and evaluating approved policies, procedures, and standards of care necessary for the coordination and delivery of excellent patient-focused care.
  2. Collaborates with the registered nurse, physician, other health care professionals and administrative personnel to plan the delivery of care on the unit and to create joint guidelines, policies, and protocols for patient care.
  3. Partners in coordination, development, implementation and evaluation of patient care policies and procedures designed to affect both clinical care and operational efficiency within the division.
  4. Partners with the Associate Medical Director, administrative leadership, and Nursing Director in the process of recruiting, onboarding, and coaching APP staff.
  5. Provides ongoing coaching, feedback, and mentoring to APPs at all stages of professional development.
  6. In collaboration with the Associate Medical Director and Nursing Director, establishes an APP schedule to meet 24/7 operations within budget.
  7. Maintains APP practice for both maintenance of professional licensure and clinical skills.
  8. Collaborates with APP and hospital educational resources to facilitate learning experiences for staff and students assigned to the unit and acts as a resource to those who may be new to the institution.
  9. Supports research efforts to advance knowledge and promote research-based practice.
  10. Actively assures APPs operate to fullest scope of their practice in collaboration with Director of APPs.
  11. In collaboration with the Nursing and Medical Director, continually evaluates quality and safety performance, identifies improvement opportunities, and plans and implements programs for improvement.
  12. Identifies learning needs and goals on a regular basis and designs a plan to meet them for the ICU APP team.
  13. Establishes self as a resource in areas of the hospital where expertise may be required and participates in leadership groups and institutional committees.

Neuro ICU APP Lead Supervisory Responsibilities:

  1. Assists Associate Medical Director, Sr. Administrative Manager, and Nursing Director with interviewing/hiring of new staff.
  2. Preparation of annual APP performance evaluations.
  3. Assist in conflict resolution involving APPs.
  4. Maintenance of APP credentialing and competency documentation.
  5. The position does not directly supervise APPs. As the unit grows, this may be re-evaluated.

Minimum Qualifications:

  1. Current Massachusetts licensure as a Nurse Practitioner or Physician Assistant in Massachusetts.
  2. At least 4 years of relevant acute care Nurse Practitioner or Physician Assistant practice required, preferably in a Neurologic care setting, demonstrated ability to lead and desire to grow in a leadership capacity.
  3. Current active licensure in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts as a Certified Nurse Practitioner or as a Physician Assistant.
  4. For Nurse Practitioner Applicants: Certification from a national certifying body acceptable to the Board of Registration in Nursing as an adult/family/or acute care nurse practitioner.
  5. For Physician Assistant Applicants: Certification by the National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants (NCCPA).
  6. Certification in Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS).
  7. Previous managerial/leadership experience strongly preferred.
