AMVAC, an American Vanguard Company is hiring a Senior Process Engineer with chemical manufacturing experience for the Axis, Alabama location.


As a member of the Engineering Department, the Senior Process Engineer is responsible for process engineering including startup, troubleshooting, and production of chemicals for AMVAC customers worldwide. The Senior Process Engineer will support process hazard analyzes (PHA) and other aspects of the process safety management (PSM) program, as well as contribute to capital and process improvement projects. The Senior Process Engineer ensures that process information is developed, reviewed and made available as required.




About the role:

The primary role of the Senior Process Engineer is to provide technical support and implement improvements to existing manufacturing processes through troubleshooting and process optimization. It actively seeks ways to maximize efficiency, improve product quality and reduce manufacturing costs.


Job Responsibilities:

  • Provide technical support and implement improvements to existing manufacturing processes through process troubleshooting and optimization
  • Proactively seek ways to maximize efficiency, improve product quality, and reduce manufacturing costs
  • Troubleshoot any processing, quality, or equipment abnormalities and develop actions to help prevent recurrence
  • Apply comprehensive and diverse knowledge of chemical process principals to support routine operations including simulation / process design; preparing heat and material balances; collecting and document operating data for production KPI’s,
  • Perform hydraulic calculations and analysis
  • Provide engineering documentation for sizing of process equipment, i.e., pumps, heat exchangers, control valves and relief valves
  • Support for plant process safety management (PSM) system by leading PHA reviews, driving management of change processes, supporting incident investigations, and other related activities
  • Prepare capital project estimates and ROI analyses
  • Lead or assist on capital projects and plant start-ups utilizing process knowledge to translate technical packages into a plant design
  • Assist in major equipment bid evaluations from a technical perspective, support development and update of P&IDs and PFDs, develop instrumentation specifications and selection
  • Perform rigorous heat exchange equipment design and analysis
  • Model physical properties for broad spectrum of fluids and mixtures including hazardous & complex chemicals
  • Write campaign summaries and technical reports
  • Collaborate with Technology (R&D) group on process optimization, new process designs and new product development
  • Ensure compliance with all regulatory, environmental and safety requirements
  • Comply with all company policies, practices and lawful directives
  • Perform other assignments as necessary and directed by management


Skills & Qualifications

  • B.S. degree in Chemical Engineering (required)
  • 7+ years' chemical plant experience with a broad technical understanding of plant operations
  • Advanced knowledge of process design for chemical manufacturing
  • Read and understand P&lDs (Piping and Instrument Design)
  • Ability to use Aspen simulator and hydraulic calculation software
  • Be able to troubleshoot process equipment and instrumentation and provide solutions
  • Process optimization methodologies such as Six Sigma, lean manufacturing or PDCA desired
  • Able to work as a team member as well as independently
  • Must have excellent communication and computer skills (Word, Excel, etc.)
  • Be able to work nights / weekends if required
  • Some travel may be desired
  • Must be able to participate in the respiratory program and the Safety monthly blood draw program
  • Must be able to pass a physical and drug test
  • Must be able to pass a pre-employment criminal background check
