Medtronic is looking for a Senior Principal Systems Engineer. This role will collaborate across the Surgical OU Research and Development organization to bring innovation to patients. The successful candidate will be accountable for the definition, integration, and validation of system solutions to meet the ever-evolving needs of our patients, physician partners, and our business. She or he will be accountable for systems design control deliverables and exert significant influence over the design solution. She or he will lead a cross functional team to perform needs analysis, use case and use condition analyses, functional analyses, requirements development, and system and subsystem architecture documentation. She or he will also coordinate and lead trade-off studies, prototype evaluations, and clinical acceptability studies.
You will:
- Actively participate in regular R&D project team meetings for the development of new complex surgical systems.
- Lead a group of systems engineers in the development and timely delivery of systems design control deliverables.
- Contribute to planning and execution of pre-clinical laboratory studies to evaluate the acceptability of product prototypes.
- Apply Systems Engineering principles and best practices to new product development.
- Actively contribute to risk management including hazard analysis, usability risk analysis, and risk mitigation.
- Communicate progress and roadblocks to project management organization and technical leadership.
- Direct the day-to-day activities of, and mentorship to junior systems engineers.
- Provide post commercialization product support including root cause investigation and resolution activities.
Responsibilities may include the following and other duties may be assigned.
- Performs technical planning, system integration, verification and validation, evaluates alternatives including cost and risk, supportability and analyses for total systems.
- Analyses are performed at all levels of total system product to include: concept, design, fabrication, test, installation, operation, maintenance and disposal.
- Ensures the logical and systematic conversion of user, customer, and stakeholder needs into engineering requirements, and the logical and systematic conversion of product requirements into total systems solutions that acknowledge technical, schedule, and cost constraints.
- Performs functional analysis, timeline analysis, detail trade studies, requirements allocation and interface definition studies to translate customer requirements into hardware and software specifications.
TECHNICAL SPECIALIST CAREER STREAM: An individual contributor with responsibility in our technical functions to advance existing technology or introduce new technology and therapies. Formulates, delivers and/or manages projects assigned and works with other stakeholders to achieve desired results. May act as a mentor to colleagues or may direct the work of other lower level professionals. The majority of time is spent delivering R&D, systems or initiatives related to new technologies or therapies – from design to implementation - while adhering to policies, using specialized knowledge and skills.

Required Knowledge and Experience: Requires mastery level knowledge of specialty area and working knowledge of several other areas, typically obtained through advanced education combined with experience. May have deep knowledge of project management. Requires a Baccalaureate degree (or for degrees earned outside of the United States, a degree which satisfies the requirements of 8 C.F.R. § 214.2(h)(4)(iii)(A) and minimum of 10 years of relevant experience, or advanced degree with a minimum of 8 years of relevant experience.
