Northrop Grumman Aeronautics Systems has an opening for a Manager 2, Avionics Engineering to lead a Vehicle Management Systems (VMS) team at the Rancho Bernardo, San Diego, CA site. In this hybrid role, you will be in the office 2-3 days per week.

Summary: The VMS team is responsible for vehicle flight control and safety and manages the following subsystems: Navigation, Identification Friend or Foe (IFF), Radar Altimeter (RadAlt), Air Data System (ADS), Flight Control Actuation System (FCAS), Vehicle Management Computer (flight computer), and the Ethernet switch. This hands-on technical role will provide assignment management, functional homeroom management, and technical contributions as part of a team of VMS engineers performing efforts on air vehicle programs within the Autonomous Intelligence, Surveillance, Reconnaissance, and Targeting business area.

Members of the team perform proposal development, technical planning, system integration, verification and validation, cost and risk analysis, and supportability and effectiveness analyses for total systems. Analyses are performed at all levels of total system product to include concept development, design, fabrication, test, installation, operation, maintenance, and disposal. Team members ensure the logical and systematic conversion of customer or product requirements into total systems solutions that acknowledge technical, schedule, and cost constraints. They also perform functional analysis, timeline analysis, detailed trade studies, requirements allocation and interface definition studies to translate customer requirements into hardware and software specifications.

Approximately 80% of the role will be performing assignment manager duties. These responsibilities include:

  • Providing technical assignment management for the team, assessing and prioritizing work
  • Advising on the potential impacts of compromises of flight critical systems
  • Reviewing work products developed by the team
  • Assisting Cost Account Managers (CAMs) with Earned Value reporting
  • General duties will include flight computer subsystem lab testing, flight test support, anomaly resolution, and supplier management

The remaining time (approx. 20%) will be spent performing section manager duties. These responsibilities include:

  • Leading a team of 12-14 VMS engineers, including interns
  • Providing personnel with career development, employee engagement, mentoring, and coaching
  • Coordinating with programs for staffing, recruiting, and training needs
  • Performance management including preparing and delivering performance evaluations, evaluating/recommending employees for promotions, working with Human Resources to mediate and resolve personnel issues, and counseling employees on their performance as necessary
  • Ensuring process alignment through the work of direct reports, support program milestone reviews and deep dives, and assist in development and implementation of division objectives
  • Working closely with managers of other engineering disciplines, program managers, and IPT leads

Basic Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in a related STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering or Mathematics) discipline from an accredited university and 9 years of related experience OR a Master's degree in a related STEM discipline with 7 years of related experience
  • Ability to obtain a DoD Secret Clearance
  • Experience with test equipment (oscilloscopes, signal generators, signal analyzers, and/or multi-meters)

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Active DoD Secret security clearance or higher
  • Previous leadership experience
  • Proficiency in MATLAB
  • Good understanding of general avionics components
  • Experience in the following areas: flight test, supplier management, requirements development, and requirements verification testing
  • Experience as a military, civil, or commercial avionics technician

Salary Range: $151,900 - $227,900

The above salary range represents a general guideline; however, Northrop Grumman considers a number of factors when determining base salary offers such as the scope and responsibilities of the position and the candidate's experience, education, skills and current market conditions.

Employees may be eligible for a discretionary bonus in addition to base pay. Annual bonuses are designed to reward individual contributions as well as allow employees to share in company results. Employees in Vice President or Director positions may be eligible for Long Term Incentives.
