Overview
This role entails design, analysis, integration, and test of optical subassemblies and systems in support of free-space optical communication product development. The ideal candidate will have prior experience with design/analysis of optical systems as well as hand-on experience building and aligning optical systems.
Responsibilities
- Design optical systems in Zemax (including both flight hardware and supporting metrology stations)
- Develop fabrication drawings for optical elements, and work with sourcing team to identify and select manufacturers
- Analyze optical system performance impacts due to manufacturing & alignment tolerances, as well as environmental effects
- Develop optical alignment procedures and specify necessary tooling and metrology equipment
- Perform alignment and characterization testing of optical subassemblies and systems
- Specify, commission, and manage optical lab equipment and facilities
Minimum Qualifications
- Minimum 5 years of experience with design, analysis, and test of optical systems
- Proficiency with Zemax, OpticStudio, or CodeV; ideal candidate would also have experience with SigFit or other similar STOP analysis tool
- Experience working with mechanical engineers to co-develop opto-mechanical designs, mounting fixtures, tooling, etc. Ideal candidate would also have strong knowledge in opto-mechanical design principles, and experience with designing ruggedized optical systems for harsh environments.
- First-hand experience in building, aligning and testing optical systems in a lab or production environment
- Highly proficient in Microsoft Office products (e.g. Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Visio)
- Excellent expository writing and oral presentation skills
- Must be a US Person (This position has export control and security-related requirements that mandate attention to the citizenship status of any potential candidate and necessitates that the individual either be a United States Citizen, Permanent Resident of the United States, or lawfully admitted into the United States as a refugee or granted asylum by the United States Government.)
