Akima Infrastructure Services, LLC (AIS), is actively seeking Engineering, Professional, Technical, and administrative support personnel as part of our staff augmentation team supporting the Department of Energy at the Y‑12 National Security Complex located in Oak Ridge, Tennessee and the Pantex Plant located in Amarillo, Texas.

Successful candidates will be employees of AIS, a premier government contractor charged with employing highly motivated and well-qualified personnel who can advance Y-12's core mission to ensure a safe, secure, and reliable U.S. nuclear deterrent, which is essential to national security. Though employed by AIS, the employee will take day-to-day direction and assignments from Y-12 staff employed directly by the security complex. Pay, benefits, Human Resources, and Employment Management functions are provided by AIS.

Qualified applicants must be a US citizen, at least 18 years of age, and able to meet pre-employment requirements including any required physicals, drug screen, and/or background investigation to satisfy clearance requirements from the Department of Energy.

Responsibilities

The Weld Engineer will be responsible for providing support to the Projects Engineering group, existing facilities operations, construction, and maintenance activities. Project support includes participation in designs ranging from scope definition, feasibility and conceptual studies, and preliminary/detailed designs. The Weld Engineer writes welding requirements for procurement documents, code acceptable welding, brazing, and bonding procedures in compliance with applicable code requirements. The candidate also solves problems in designing and maintaining plant facilities and processes. The candidate will be responsible for training site personnel from engineering, maintenance, and construction on the welding requirements, criteria, and compliance documents applicable for performing work activities.

  • The Weld Engineer also reviews design output documents for welding technical data for compliance with national codes and standards and company approved procedures and policies. The Weld Engineer evaluates bid proposals for technical compliance of welding submittals, reviews vendor submittals, and conducts vendor surveillances to ensure compliance to contractually specified welding requirements.

  • The Weld Engineer may be assigned field activities supporting on-site organizations, including on-site subcontractors, performing welding, brazing, bonding activities or non-destructive examination activities associated with welding, brazing, or bonding that falls within the scope of the Welding Program Manual. As a Field Weld Engineer (FEW) candidate maintains oversight/ownership and ultimate responsibilities of Rod Rooms. The FWE reviews on-site work packages involving welding to ensure that design output is complete and correct and establishes hold points for the fabrication and inspection of welds that satisfy the specifications and procedure requirements. The candidate generates the Weld Inspection Record and any associated weld maps for the work package and performs random in-process oversight activities of any on-site welding activity. The FWE reviews all completed Welding Inspection Records for completeness and correctness before final closeout. The candidate must have extensive technical knowledge and understanding of AWS D1.1, ASME B31, and ASME Section IX Welding codes and their associated quality programs (ASME NQA-1, 10 CFR 830.120, etc.). Processing of non-conformances and release of repair operations instructions. Knowledge in the SMAW, GMAW, FCAW, and GTAW processes. Knowledge of autogenous weld process for stainless steel tube for high vacuum applications. Knowledge of manual and automatic GTAW welding of stainless steel for high vacuum applications.

Qualifications

  • ABET accredited engineering bachelor’s degree and 10-14 years’ experience or a MS with 10-13 years’ experience.

  • Ability to obtain a DOE Q clearance.

  • This position requires the ability to obtain and maintain a clearance from the Department of Energy and would be identified as a Workplace Substance Abuse (WSAP) testing designated position. WSAP positions require participation in an ongoing random drug testing program in addition to the pre-employment drug screen.

  • Pre-employment Drug Screen - external applicants selected for this position are required to successfully complete a post- offer, pre-employment drug test.

  • Medical Exam(s) - Job related pre-placement medical examinations may be required for this position.
