ABOUT THE ROLE
The Principal Systems Engineer drives Mission Critical Communications system development to provide compelling, measurable, and operationally sustainable user experiences for our customers. In this role, you will champion the customer experience in Public Safety, Transportation, and Utility industries. The role will serve as an internal services gatekeeper and Subject Matter Expert, actively working with cross-functional teams, and would assist with feasibility and scope analysis of customer requests regarding features and services.

WHAT MAKES A SUCCESSFUL TEAM LEAD PRINCIPAL SYSTEMS ENGINEER?

  • Provide Systems Engineering expertise and leadership for internal customers and liaise with cross-functional teams within Engineering, Product Development, Test Engineering, and other stakeholders to implement new technical solutions and services with focus on the customer experience.
  • Lead technical discussions and formulate innovative solutions to complex scenarios/use models of a Mission Critical Communications system deployment.
  • With the Director of Engineering of Customer Fulfillment, assess project needs and deliverables to assign and match Project Engineers with the right skillset to service delivery.
  • Manage the preliminary design review process and provide quality control reviews of standard project design documentation.
  • Direct and support debug taskforces/tiger teams, work closely with internal teams; Project Engineering, System Support, Test Engineering, and Development, to triage, identify root cause, and provide resolution on defects and other issues quickly and efficiently.
  • Collaborate with internal and external partner organizations to ensure overall hardware and software solutions meet significant quality, reliability, and service level requirements for a Mission Critical Communications system.
  • Travel to new and existing customers to demonstrate customer commitment; show value and keep efforts coordinated by consultation and participating in regular meetings to stay connected with the customer.
  • Drive cross-functional quality improvements focused on robust design.
  • Identify potential security and performance issues at multiple layers of deployment, from hardware, operating environment, network and application; Provide technical expertise in identifying issues that affect availability and quality.
  • Assist in the career development of others, actively mentoring individuals on advanced technical issues and helping managers guide the career growth of their team members.
  • Evangelize best practices and methodologies.

AS A KEY MEMBER OF THIS TEAM YOU MUST BE ABLE TO:

  • Extensive knowledge in one or more of the following areas: Integrated Communication Systems (ICS), inclusive of MS desktop/Linux server operating systems, analog/digital two-way radio, SIP/VOIP telephony, Layer 2/3 TCP/IP networking, and enterprise call taking systems.
  • Familiarity with 3GPP Services, Mission Critical Push To Talk (MCPTT): Voice and Data.
  • Maintain a broad and wide range of technical expertise and depth of understanding associated with government, transportation, and utility Mission Critical Communication systems; including land mobile radio, dispatch, telephony, IP network protocols, and call taking systems for public safety, first responders and similar applications.
  • Extensive experience working in a customer-focused environment with a strong background in market research and analytics.
  • Proven track record leading customer engagements with demonstrated ability to understand technical concepts, guide strategy and deliver positive results for customers.
  • Passionate for continuously improving the customer experience.
  • Ability to influence and earn the trust of senior stakeholders and move business teams to take action. Capability to articulate and translate technical language to non-technical customers.
  • Proven leadership skills and meaningful experience successfully leading teams.
  • Results-minded; recognize how to capitalize on the diverse strengths of people around you to succeed.
  • Demonstrated experience with Business Analysis tools, including strong proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite; Excel, Visio, PowerPoint, and Project. SharePoint; Excel Services, WorkFlow and other advanced features. CRM tools like Salesforce.
  • Must possess and maintain valid Driver’s License; Must be able to drive as part of performing job duties.
  • Must be willing and able to satisfactorily pass background checks as required, as entry to a customer site may be contingent, by contract, upon the employee passing an ongoing background screen.
  • Certifications: CCNA Routing and Switching, CCNA Service Provider, CCNA Wireless, Network+, Security+, ITIL Foundations v3, or PMP.
  • FCC GMR and/or HAM radio licenses preferred.
  • IP data networking fundamentals.

TRAVEL:
Must be able to travel about 20% of the time.
Must be able to travel overnight.
Must be able to travel internationally.

EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE REQUIRED: The following list of requirements are considered the minimum levels of education and experience necessary to perform this job successfully. Any equivalent combination of education and experience that provides the applicant with the knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform the job is acceptable.

  • Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, Computer Science or in a related field preferred.
  • Minimum eight (8) years of recent and relevant experience in a similar type of role preferably deploying radio, telecommunications, IP networks or large-scale communications systems or any combination of education and experience that provides equivalent expertise.
  • Supervisory experience a plus.
  • Any combination of education and experience that provides equivalent expertise will be considered.
