Job Summary
The purpose of this position is to manage a staff responsible for creating and maintaining hydraulic models of natural gas distribution and transmission systems. Position is accountable for ensuring model deliverables are met and data accuracy is achieved by managing resources and priorities; identifying issues and fixing root causes associated with data, process, and software tools; and implementing new software and process changes to improve results. Position also provides data analytics support and is responsible for planning hardware and software changes/upgrades that impact the System Planning department.
Please note, this position may be filled at either the Sr. Engineer (Level 6) or Principal Engineer (Level 7). Individuals who demonstrate advanced skills in terms of work experience, education, and certifications may be eligible for the advanced grade.
Functional Expertise:
- Familiarity with facility data in GIS, PITS, AR, SCADA, and customer data (CIS, NBA, BCA, GOS / interruptible / transportation / special rate) for each utility.
- Works with local System Operations personnel, Marketing, Gas Operations, GIS, and IT to set up data extraction procedures and automate them if possible.
- Utilizes hydraulic modeling and data processing tools to build and validate models.
- Maintains gas distribution model and load information.
- Provides SME guidance for Synergi, Customer Management Module, Model Builder, Mainframe DS system, and other in-house applications.
Business Acumen:
- Manages resources and priorities to ensure model deliverables are met.
- Quickly determines data essential to model building and processes large amounts of data efficiently.
- Ensures data accuracy is achieved by identifying issues related to data, process, and/or software application tools and making corrections at the source.
- Identify improvement opportunities by periodically assessing business needs against current resources and service level achievements for better results.
Engagement:
- Collaborates with System Operations, IT, Gas Control, Land Management, Customer Development, Marketing, Rate, Engineering Design, System Operations, and Field Operations to ensure input data are accurate and current.
- Provides rationale for the solution recommended.
- Works with vendor to ensure future software enhancements align with SCG business needs.
Driving Results:
- Manages staff to ensure performance meets expectations.
- Provides quality control of the hydraulic model and GIS mapping system.
- Performs validation checks to determine if the model performs in concert with field conditions.
- Identifies issues and implements changes to improve the current process and procedures.
Education, Certifications/Licenses:
Required:
- BA/BS Degree in Engineering
Preferred:
- BS Degree in Civil, Mechanical, or Industrial Engineering
- Professional Engineering License
Lead Engineer (Level 7)
Required for consideration:
- Minimum of 10-15 years of experience in engineering, technology, or GIS role

Working Conditions/Physical Requirements:
- The incumbent will work in an office environment.
- Physical demands: Prolonged sitting.
- On-call duties: None initially. Will be placed on rotation to respond to urgent issues after training and experience is gained.
