Position Summary/Purpose of Position:
The IT Network Engineer will be heavily involved in the MAX network refresh effort with the racking and stacking of equipment, the installation and testing of fiber, and once the refresh has been completed, this role will be involved in the support of the network after deployment. This will include supporting both the DWDM network and the traditional router and switching network. This role will also be involved in the support of the MAX out-of-band solution. This role will be involved in accessing and supporting networking tools such as Netbox, CACTI, Nagios and vendor tools such as Ciena’s MCP/Navigator software. This position will be required to support the power duties at the PoPs, including sizing PDUs, assessing power needs, ensuring sufficient air flows, and working with vendors on ordering supplies and circuits.
The Network Engineer role is responsible for creating and updating documentation and is expected to work in a team environment but will need to work independently as the situation dictates.
Lastly, the networking field is in a constant state of flux with the ever-present updating of gear and software. As such, this position will require the perpetual updating of skills to remain relevant.
This position is considered an essential position and may be required to work at the normal work location or an alternative location during a major catastrophic event, weather emergency, or other operational emergencies to help maintain continuity of University services.
- Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university.
Experience:
- 0-2 years of professional information technology system administration experience.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
- Basic knowledge of university or other academic-like environments and policies.
- Basic knowledge of general networking concepts.
- Ability to assist with the racking and stacking of MAX equipment.
- Able to interpret and understand Fiber Optic Design Packages, containing installation drawings and detailed splice matrices.
- Monitor and inspect contractors during fiber optic installations and splicing.
- Knowledge and experience with Optical Time Domain Reflectometer (OTDR) testing. Able to review OTDR test results performed by others.
- Knowledge and experience with Optical Loss Test Set (OLTS) testing. Able to review OLTS test results performed by others.
- Some experience performing OSP fiber optic cable splicing is a plus.
- Basic knowledge of optical test equipment, fiber fusion splicer, fiber microscope, and light meter.
- Skill in the use of office administrative products (e.g., Google Office products).
- Ability to perform multiple tasks, set priorities, and meet deadlines.
- Ability to multitask while demonstrating a commitment to customer service and sensitivity to a culturally and ethnically diverse community.
- Resourcefulness, creativity, and a strong, discipline-specific, customer service orientation.
