Job Requirements / Description

Berkeley Lab's Engineering division is hiring a Safety Automation Engineer to ensure the safety and reliability of facilities handling ionizing and non-ionizing radiation. This role involves full-cycle software development for Safety Protection Systems (PPS), including design, development, testing, and maintenance. The PPS combines relay and PLC technologies to safeguard personnel in high-risk environments.

The position requires high judgment and decision-making skills and may involve leading projects and collaborating with engineers, scientists, and external partners, including those from other DOE labs and the global accelerator community. Working on the ALS-U project offers a chance to engage with advanced technologies like PLCs, FPGAs, and EPICS, and to develop skills for future roles at the new ALS facility or in international scientific initiatives.

What You Will Do:

  1. Oversee all software development phases for Personnel Protection Systems (PPS), from requirements to maintenance.
  2. Select methods and techniques for effective results.
  3. Design and implement complex safety control systems with a focus on automation.
  4. Develop, test, and integrate prototypes into existing systems.
  5. Lead software projects, guiding coordinators and technicians.
  6. Ensure adherence to functional safety standards and regulations.
  7. Conduct risk assessments and implement safety measures.
  8. Perform software verification to meet industry standards.
  9. Troubleshoot complex automation and safety issues.
  10. Document and present R&D activities.
  11. Collaborate with engineers, scientists, and external partners on system integration.
  12. Provide training and support on safety practices and system operations.
  13. Stay updated on trends and advancements in automation and safety.
  14. Network with key contacts beyond your area of expertise.

What is Required:

  1. Degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, Automation, Electronics, or a related field.
  2. Minimum 8 years of experience with a Bachelor's degree, 6 years with a Master's, or equivalent experience.
  3. At least 6 years designing and implementing safety-related control systems.
  4. Experience with PLC-based software applications, especially Siemens PLCs and TIA Portal.
  5. Proven skills in developing software interfaces with control hardware and writing design specifications.
  6. Familiarity with functional safety standards (e.g., IEC 61508, ISO 13849).
  7. Proficient in automation programming languages (e.g., Ladder Logic, Structured Text).
  8. Knowledge of safety PLC design concepts (e.g., redundancy, safety integrity levels, fail-safe design).
  9. Proven ability to manage multiple projects and meet deadlines.
  10. Experience with modern coding standards, including code documentation, version control, debugging, and testing.
  11. Strong oral and written communication skills for documenting and presenting R&D activities.
  12. Excellent organizational skills and clear documentation.
  13. Proactive problem-solving with a knack for complex technical solutions.
  14. Effective interpersonal skills for collaborating with diverse teams.
  15. Knowledge of safety principles and risk assessment.
  16. Detail-oriented, committed to quality and safety.
  17. Eager to stay updated on industry advancements and engage in continuous learning.

Desired Qualifications:

  1. Experience with Siemens SIMATIC S7-1500 controllers, TIA Portal, PLC-Sim Advanced, and Simit.
  2. Skilled in Siemens WinCC Comfort/Unified HMI development and Siemens libraries/diagnostics.
  3. Knowledge of industrial safety and fault-tolerant automation systems.
  4. Familiar with safety hardware (e.g., safety PLCs, relays) and industrial network protocols (e.g., Profinet, Ethernet/IP, SNMP, Modbus, OPCUA).
  5. Experience with FPGA-based applications and similar facilities.
  6. Familiarity with electrical design tools (e.g., AutoCAD Electrical, EPLAN).
  7. Knowledge of additional programming languages (e.g., C/C++, Python, Java).
  8. Siemens TIA-SAFETY and TIA-PRO2 experience.
  9. Certified Functional Safety Engineer (CFSE) or equivalent certification.
  10. Siemens TIA-UWCC1 and other safety certifications (e.g., TUV, ISA).
