CNC Programmer/Manufacturing Engineer
Job Overview:
HF Custom/Sam Moore, a division of Hooker Furnishings Corporation, is seeking a dynamic and experienced CNC Programmer/Manufacturing Engineer to work in our Bedford, VA location. HF Custom/Sam Moore has been committed to crafting exceptional custom upholstery for over 80 years. Hooker Furnishings Corporation, in its 100th year of business, is a designer, marketer and importer of case goods, leather furniture, fabric-upholstered furniture, and outdoor furniture for the residential, hospitality, and contract markets.
The CNC Programmer/Manufacturing Engineer will be an integral part of the engineering team and will lead the optimization of machining processes and machine tool capabilities for our new machine room. This position will report to the Director of Engineering.
Key Responsibilities:
  1. CNC Programming:
    • Analyze available information including part prints, manufacturing operation sheets, and part models for the creation and modification of CNC programs for various 2, 3, 4, and 5 axis machine tools.
    • Handle multiple CNC program projects and work cross functionally with production, product development, and other departments across the organization. Write new programs and modify existing programs to improve processes.
    • Collaborate closely with product development and design teams to translate product specifications into machine-readable code.
  2. CAD/CAM :
    • Demonstrate proficiency in SolidWorks/Solid Edge/SolidCAM to create and modify design files and generate CNC programs.
    • Collaborate with production, engineering, and product development to ensure integration between design software and CNC programming tools.
  3. Setup, Troubleshooting and Testing:
    • Collaborate with production and engineering to oversee installation of new machines, set-up new machines, and assist with hiring and training of new machine operators.
    • Once the machine is installed, perform comprehensive testing and troubleshooting of programs, using knowledge and skills to quickly identify and resolve issues promptly.
    • Work closely with the production team to address operational challenges related to the programming.
    • Have skills and knowledge to operate the machine smoothly. This is not an operator role but does require the knowledge and ability to be an excellent operator to train new operators and troubleshoot machines when needed.
  4. Product Development Cross-Training:

It is important that the person in this role has a comprehensive understanding of our engineering processes from design to production and therefore will have the opportunity to cross-train with our product development team initially on the following:
  • Create drawings for upholstered hardwood/CNC frames using Solid Edge.
  • Create patterns both by hand and using Design Concept 2D.
  • Develop prototypes and collaborate with plant operations to produce and test prototype frames to ensure they meet quality and industry standards.
  • Approve frames for first production runs.
  • Collaborate with design, quality, manufacturing, and engineering to integrate frames smoothly into the production process.
Qualifications:
  • Proficient in drafting/modeling software
  • Solid Edge/Solid Works/SolidCAM experience preferred
  • B.S. or A.A. degree in manufacturing or engineering discipline or comparable experience preferred
  • Minimum of two years of experience in a manufacturing/production environment
  • Demonstrated experience with 3-axis CNC or Robotics (5 and 6 axis preferred)
  • Working understanding of G-Code
  • Ability to read schematics/blueprints
  • Comfortable speaking and presenting information in groups of up to 10 people
  • Ability to work under pressure with deadlines
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office, specifically Excel
  • ERP experience a plus (specifically D365)
Work Location:
This position will be based full-time in our Bedford, VA location, but will require up to 25% travel as needed in the first 6 months. After the first 6 months, the position will only require occasional domestic travel (10%).
