Job Summary

Responsible for provisioning, deploying, administering, monitoring, maintaining, troubleshooting, upgrading, and patching of Information Technology resources and services. Additional responsibility to document processes, procedures, system configurations and specifications.

Minimum Education and Experience

  1. No degree – Six years recent applicable experience
  2. Associate Degree with 4 years applicable experience
  3. Bachelor’s Degree with 2 years applicable experience

Preferred Education and Experience

  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related technical field.
  • Two years of experience in backend or data engineering.
  • Proficiency in GraphQL, PostgreSQL, AWS Relational Database Service (RDS), Express.js, Docker, and AWS.
  • Advanced SQL skills and experience with relational databases and database design.
  • Strong proficiency in object-oriented programming languages.
  • Experience with cloud Data Warehouse solutions.
  • Experience working with large data sets and distributed computing.
  • Working knowledge of cloud-based solutions and services.
  • Experience in database management using PostgreSQL.
  • Skills in developing and managing RESTful web APIs.
  • Strong understanding of data integrity, optimization, and security.
  • Ability to build and maintain efficient, scalable data pipelines.
  • Proficiency in data pipeline and workflow management tools.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

The Systems Engineer II is a vital contributor to the data engineering, storage, and usability aspects of multiple large-scale research initiatives, ensuring comprehensive data solutions that support the BrainHealth Project and other strategic data-centric projects. This role demands a forward-thinking approach to building data infrastructures that are not only robust but also optimized for future AI and machine learning applications.

This role involves:

  • Designing, developing, maintaining, and optimizing the data infrastructure required for accurate extraction, transformation, and loading (ETL) of data from a wide variety of sources.
  • Building, maintaining, and deploying data products for analytics and data science teams on cloud platforms, particularly AWS.
  • Preparing raw data in Data Warehouses into consumable datasets for both technical and non-technical stakeholders, ensuring these datasets are primed for AI and machine learning uses.
  • Ensuring data accuracy, integrity, privacy, security, and compliance through rigorous quality control procedures.
  • Leveraging data controls to maintain data privacy, security, compliance, and quality for allocated areas of ownership, with special considerations for AI ethics and governance.

Collaborating closely with Lead Software Engineers and Data Scientists, the Systems Engineer II will lead efforts to build and maintain robust data pipelines, optimize systems for efficiency, and ensure smooth data flow for user engagement, research, and AI-driven projects. They will also be responsible for redesigning data structures to accommodate new sources and types, maintaining data compliance and security standards.

The successful candidate will be expected to keep abreast of the latest industry developments through regular training and certifications, contributing to a culture of excellence and innovation. They will play a crucial role in enabling the organization to make data-driven decisions that drive strategic objectives, ensuring both innovation and operational excellence within the Emerging Technology team. This position is ideal for a detail-oriented individual who is passionate about impacting the future of data-driven research in healthcare.

Physical Demands and Working Conditions

Long hours at computer terminal, including light computer lifting, installation and maintenance. Occasional evening or weekend hours and may be required to travel.

Additional Information

After the probationary period, this role may be eligible for a hybrid (partly remote/partly in office) work schedule, subject to business need and manager approval. Must be located within the DFW Area and have the ability to be on campus with 24 hours of notice. A UT Dallas Remote Work Agreement will be required within 14 days after approval.
