Senior Engineer, Mechanical (Space Systems)
Overview:
The Senior Mechanical Engineer in the Project Engineering group works on designing new pneumatic, hydraulic, and electro-mechanical products for various Aerospace customers/platforms, including, but not limited to, reusable commercial launch vehicles, deep space missions, military aircrafts, and hypersonic missiles.
The Senior Mechanical Engineer is responsible for work product to meet the customer's requirements (including all design, functional, material, and test requirements from the customer's component and sub-tier specifications) as well as the cost targets established during the proposal stage. The Sr. Engineer shall enlist the help of other disciplines when necessary, such as manufacturing, other engineering disciplines, and QA.
This role is responsible for assigned engineering activities, either of a development or sales order nature, including definition, plans, analysis, test definition and review, results, manufacturing coordination, schedules, budgets and reporting. This description covers mechanical design engineers.
Essential or Primary / Key Responsibilities :
  • Review and assess compliance with the customer's component specifications and sub-level specifications.
    • Coordinate with other disciplines outside engineering as required.
    • Record in writing, and distribute to the Contracts Administrator and Program Manager, for transmission to the customer, when applicable.

  • Perform or oversee the design and performance of the product design components or major assemblies or system in accordance with the customer requirements, including the following duties; :
    • Design of electronics mechanical packaging for high-reliability environments.
    • Design analysis, including control system, component stress, thermal and component tolerance analysis, thermal and mechanical stress, as applicable

  • Coordinate the creation of a preliminary bill of material in the business system and verifying its accuracy.
  • Create development testing requirements, development test instructions, and release of drawings for development hardware and supporting test equipment.
  • Provide detailed requirement outlines to Documentation Control for creation of the following:
    • Test Procedures (DVT, ATP, QTP)
    • Verification Matrix to the specifications
    • Materials list
    • Analysis Reports

  • Maintain ongoing surveillance of customer-driven changes, with written notification to Contracts Administrator or Program Manager, including program impact assessment.
  • Provide engineering support (analysis/design/specifications) of the other departments/subcontractors/suppliers working on the program.
  • Provide technical and priority direction to designers/drafters.
  • Ensure accuracy of all drawings/documents on the project, except purely drafting technique issues. This includes tolerance stack-ups.
  • Take responsibility for NCR activities as well as MRB authority to disposition discrepant hardware (Following QA Training).
  • Determine and prepare PDR/CDR technical and technical schedule items.
  • Assist the Engineering Manager / Director, or Program Manager in determining the needed resources and priorities for a project.
  • Meet drawing release dates.
  • Provide coordination, technical inputs, and approvals of CDRL items to Documentation Control consistent with their dates.
  • Provide coordination, test instructions, and drawings for development testing to Engineering Lab technician(s) consistent with program schedule.
  • Communicate technical and schedule problems to Engineering Manager / Director, Contracts Administrator, and Program Manager in a timely manner, when applicable.
  • Perform or coordinate all analyses, both design level, and customer-required.
  • Chair internal reviews of the design, and any subsequent changes to the drawings.
  • Coordinate and incorporate customer/other disciplines comments to drawings in a timely and tactful manner.


Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's Degree in Engineering
  • 3-10 years' relevant work experience in a high technology, electro-mechanical, environment in the Aerospace and Military industries and can be considered a subject matter expert in an area related to these products and technologies
  • Familiarity with government contractual procurement procedures, standards and quality requirements
  • Exemplary verbal/written communication skills required for multi-faceted interactions with all levels of personnel within the organization, as well as any and all outside agents, including but not limited to; vendors, suppliers, customers, potential job candidates, etc.
  • Highly computer literate, with MS Office/PC expertise, and demonstrated experience with applicable systems, programs, equipment, etc.
  • Expert knowledge of fluid controls, control systems, structural or thermal analysis and/or software related to these products
  • Considerable experience in the best practices of development, production, and maintenance/continuation of these products, systems, or software code.
  • Must be a US Citizen

Additional Duties:
  • Bring initiatives and activities to closure in a timely manner through effective interaction with individuals, both internal and external to the Marotta organization (as required).
  • Support and facilitate training, as needed, to maintain a cross-trained workforce and to support operational goals and objectives

  • Ensure that work area and work areas of direct reports are clean, secure, and well maintained
  • Complete special projects and miscellaneous assignments as required

Work Environment:
  • While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently exposed to conditions typical of a manufacturing/machine shop environment, including, but not limited to: fluids, fumes or airborne particles, moving mechanical parts, noise and vibration
  • This job interacts both in a professional office environment and a manufacturing/machine shop environment. This role uses standard office equipment such as computers, phones, photocopiers, filing cabinets and fax machines, as well as environments inclusive of the appropriate eye, hearing and foot protection (as required).
  • Local and non-local travel is required for this position (5-20%)

  • The employee is frequently required to sit at length, stand, walk, and move about the facility.
