Position Overview:

SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory (SLAC) is operated by Stanford University as a contractor for the United States Department of Energy Office of Science. SLAC is looking for an experienced instructional designer to develop web-based training and manage the lab’s learning management system (LMS) in support of the lab’s scientific mission.

Your specific responsibilities will include:

  • Design, develop, and maintain Web-Based Training (WBT) and Instructor-Led Training (ILT) modules.
    • Develop and test web training materials to ensure SCORM conformance and section 508 compliance.
    • Build and maintain SLAC's web training library of courses.
    • Work with subject matter experts to evaluate and assess training needs.
    • Translate skills and knowledge identified from training needs assessments into learning objectives and performance measures.
    • Design, develop and produce multimedia training material, including video-based training material and interactive web-based training material.
    • Develop multimedia assets as necessary to support training, such as graphics, illustrations, video, and photography.
    • Design and develop training programs and curriculums.
    • Work with Subject Matter Experts (SMEs) to interpret DOE, OSHA, and SLAC lab policies to ensure training compliance.
    • Evaluate the effectiveness of training programs and training material.
  • Oversee the administration, maintenance, and improvements of SLAC's Learning Management System (LMS):
    • Administer the Cornerstone Learning Management System.
    • Oversee the contract with the vendor Cornerstone.
    • Research and implement enhancements and improvements to SLAC’s LMS.
    • Work with SLAC IT to ensure smooth continuous operation of the LMS.
    • Provide training process documentation.
    • Provide technical support to customers.
  • Assess and recommend technology-based training development and delivery tools.
  • Identify and recommend/implement improvements to SLAC’s training programs and processes, including the SLAC training website, SLAC’s training applications, the Cornerstone training portal, ILT training delivery, and WBT courseware and authoring tools.
  • Keep abreast with research and training technologies that enhance the ROI of SLAC’s training.
  • Maintain relationships with other training organizations within the DOE complex to benchmark training and processes and share resources.
  • Develop reporting tools to make evaluation data accessible to instructors.

To be successful in this position you will bring:

  • Bachelor’s degree and seven years of relevant experience or combination of education and relevant experience.
  • Demonstrated effectiveness in consulting with business partners and subject matter experts to assess learning needs and recommend high-impact e-learning solutions and learning curricula.
  • Demonstrated proficiency in applying instructional design theory, models, and best practices.
  • Demonstrated proficiency using instructional design tools such as learning project plans, design documents, learning hierarchies, storyboards, prototypes, etc.
  • Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively with all members of a learning team, vendor partners, and business partners to create a learning environment that is service-oriented, supportive, engaging, and effective for adult and nontraditional learners.
  • Demonstrated proficiency and experience in industry standard tools such as authoring tools, digital graphics media, audio, animation, and video production tools to create impactful courses.
  • Demonstrated ability to evaluate the effectiveness of learning materials.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to clearly and succinctly convey learning content in a manner that engages learners and improves learning retention rates.
  • Experience integrating online learning courses/certification programs with one or more learning management systems.
  • Demonstrated ability to work with diverse groups and individuals at all levels of an organization.
  • Demonstrated skills in project management of learning development projects involving eLearning authoring, audio, video, and text production and post-production, including product evaluation and testing.
  • Ability to work on multiple projects concurrently.
  • Strong technical understanding of IT integration with enterprise LMS systems and experience working with IT groups.
  • Ability to collaborate in a team situation; demonstrated ability to work with a diverse population.
  • Familiarity with assessment tools, surveys, focus groups, and data gathering methodologies.
  • Understanding of and experience with HTML, XML, JavaScript.
  • Expert level experience with WBT authoring software such as Articulate Storyline.
  • Experience with Photoshop, Illustrator, and Microsoft Office Products.
  • Experience using Learning Management Systems to deploy and administer WBT (Cornerstone LMS, SCORM Cloud, PeopleSoft ELM preferred).

In addition, preferred attributes include:

  • Graduate degree in Instructional Design or related field.
  • Extensive project management experience and the ability to manage projects in parallel.
  • Experience localizing training content to other languages, particularly Spanish.
  • Experience with non-linear video editing and production.
  • Experience with website design and development.

The expected pay range for this position is $100,000 - $135,000 per annum. SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory/Stanford University provides pay ranges representing its good faith estimate of what the university reasonably expects to pay for a position. The pay offered to a selected candidate will be determined based on factors such as (but not limited to) the scope and responsibilities of the position, the qualifications of the selected candidate, departmental budget availability, internal equity, geographic location and external.
