Adams County is seeking a Mechanical Engineer with professional engineering and project delivery experience. This position will work within the Fleet and Facilities Management (FFM) department and will report to the Manager of Planning, Design, and Construction. The position will support the FFM Capital Improvement Program (CIP) by performing a variety of engineering work, which will include design, review of plans and specifications, and technical engineering support and guidance. The ideal candidate will have prior experience in HVAC design development and construction projects.

Job Responsibilities:

  • Mechanical Engineer I: Under direction, performs professional engineering work involving the development, review, and design of mechanical systems, components, and processes associated with public infrastructure and facilities, ensuring compliance with local, state, and federal standards and specifications.
  • Mechanical Engineer II: Provides support in the discipline of mechanical engineering design, maintenance, and operations. The Mechanical Engineer II is responsible for evaluating the existing condition of mechanical systems and infrastructure to determine necessary treatments and upgrades to ensure their operational integrity. Develops programs and projects related to mechanical systems and components, overseeing them from inception through to implementation.
  • Mechanical Engineer III: Highly skilled and independent in the discipline of mechanical engineering design, maintenance, and operations. The Mechanical Engineer III operates under limited supervision and is responsible for assessing the current condition of mechanical systems and infrastructure to determine necessary upgrades and treatments to ensure their operational integrity. Develops, designs, and manages programs and projects related to mechanical systems, overseeing them from inception to implementation. Additionally, the role involves designing and managing capital improvement projects, preparing detailed engineering plans, specifications, and construction bids.
  • Senior Mechanical Engineer: Highly skilled and independent in the discipline of mechanical engineering design, maintenance, and operations. The Senior Mechanical Engineer operates with the least amount of supervision and is responsible for leading the assessment of mechanical systems and infrastructure, determining necessary upgrades and treatments to ensure their operational integrity. This role includes developing, designing, and managing programs and projects related to mechanical systems, overseeing them from inception through implementation. Additionally, the Senior Engineer takes on, participates and provides guidance regarding the design and management of capital improvement projects, preparing detailed engineering plans, specifications, and construction bids, and ensuring projects meet all required standards and deadlines.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Provides mechanical engineering design and analysis for small to medium sized HVAC projects of varying complexity.
  • Reviews mechanical plans prepared by others to ensure compliance with department design standards and policies.
  • Collaborates with Building Supervisors and Facility Project Managers to develop success criteria, scopes of work, schedules, and budgets for CIP projects.
  • Identifies and assists in the implementation of mechanical system efficiency improvements.
  • Develops and manages mechanical plans, specifications, and estimates.
  • Performs mechanical engineering studies, including collection and analyzation of mechanical system data.
  • Reviews test and balance and project commissioning reports.
  • Provides plan review and engineering analysis of proposed designs to ensure compliance with state, federal guidelines, codes, and regulations.
  • Performs contract and construction management duties for assigned mechanical projects.
  • Develops schedules and estimates, monitors construction and/or professional services contracts when required.
  • Evaluates bids/proposals and recommends selections.
  • Performs construction quality assurance, contract administration, inspection and compliance, and assurance of contractor compliance with the mechanical codes, local, state, and federal regulation as applicable to County projects.
  • Inspects and troubleshoots existing mechanical systems and provides recommended solutions.
  • Provides consultation to the maintenance division regarding mechanical equipment selection and performance.
  • Ensures that the mechanical vendors/contractors perform per contracts.
  • Represents the County in community meetings, seminars, conferences, professional associations meetings, private organizations and participates on related committees.
  • Continues professional growth through continuing education.
  • Performs other job-related duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Possess knowledge of and be able to apply principles and practices of mechanical engineering and HVAC system design.
  • Utilize terminology, methods, practices, and techniques used in technical mechanical engineering report preparation.
  • Resolve regulatory, public relations and system design questions.
  • Ensure project compliance with appropriate federal, state, and local rules, laws, and regulations.
  • Analyze and troubleshoot existing mechanical systems.
  • Perform technical research and solve multi-disciplinary engineering problems.
  • Communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing.
  • Competency in Microsoft Office applications and CAD software.
  • Establish, maintain, and foster positive and harmonious working relationships with those contacted in the course of work.
  • Embody the mission, vision, values, and cultural norms of Adams County.

Education and Training – All Levels:

Bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering from an ABET accredited program.

Experience:

  • Mechanical Engineer I: One (1) year of related professional mechanical engineering experience.
  • Mechanical Engineer II: 4 years of increasingly responsible professional mechanical engineering experience.
  • Mechanical Engineer III: Minimum of six (6) years of increasingly responsible professional mechanical engineering experience.
  • Mechanical Engineer – Senior: Minimum of ten (10) years of increasingly responsible professional mechanical engineering experience.

License or Certificate:

  • Mechanical Engineer I: Possession of an Engineering Intern (EI) certification preferred.
  • Mechanical Engineer II:
    • Possession of Engineer Intern (EI) certification is required.
    • Possession of a Professional Engineer (PE) in the State of Colorado is preferred.
  • Mechanical Engineer III & Senior Mechanical Engineer: Current registration as a Professional Engineer (PE) in the State of Colorado is required.

Background Check - All Levels:

Must pass a criminal (CBI) background check.

Other – All Levels:

Possession of a valid Colorado driver’s license.
