Team Introduction

Our database team is responsible for building and owning database products used by TikTok's infrastructure including but not limited to relational databases, key-value stores, document stores, and graph databases. In this team, you’ll have the opportunity to develop and enhance a full-stack database system including storage, query execution engine, and query optimizer as well as associated management tools in a cloud-native environment. We are a team that values end-to-end service ownership, from conception to architecture, design, implementation, testing, deployment, and service. We work in a fast-paced, highly collaborative, agile environment. We are looking for candidates in the following areas:

  1. Distributed Query Processing: including query execution, query optimization, system catalog, database schema, upgrade, monitoring, and serviceability.
  2. Distributed Transaction Processing: including database scale out, high-performance intra-cluster communication, logging/recovery, distributed transaction and lock management, replication, and high availability.
  3. Distributed Store including replication protocol: IO management, caching, hardware fault resilience on unreliable hardware.
  4. Telemetry and Serviceability including: database observability and serviceability frameworks and tools such as telemetry emission, performance, and crash diagnostics.

Technical Assessment:

Candidates who pass resume evaluation will be invited to participate in ByteDance's technical online assessment in HackerRank.

Responsibilities:

  • Implement comprehensive functional and system-test for your area of responsibility and for overall database quality.
  • Debug, conduct root cause analysis, diagnose defects.
  • Actively participate in release and deployment process.
  • Participate in the team’s on-call rotation to address complex problems in real-time and keep services operational and highly available.

Qualifications

  • BS or higher degree in Computer Science, MS degree Preferred.
  • Knowledge in software development and quality engineering.
  • Innovator with good ideas, strong problem-solving and communication skills, and a results-oriented attitude.
  • Ability to learn quickly and deliver high-quality code in a fast-paced, dynamic agile team environment.
  • Strong Java or C programming skills.
  • Must obtain work authorization in the country of employment at the time of hire, and maintain ongoing work authorization during employment.

Desired Skills

  • Practical knowledge of algorithms, patterns, and tradeoffs of distributed systems’ design.
  • Experience with database catalog, upgrade, query execution, query optimization.
  • Experience building a high-performance large-scale database platform.
  • Any experience with Open Source projects, especially with database and/or storage projects such as MySQL, PostgreSQL, CockroachDB, Oceanbase, TiDB, ETCD, Zookeeper, Ceph, Kafka, etc. is a big plus.
  • Knowledge and experience with scripting languages such as Python.
  • Successful candidates should have a good understanding of network technologies like DNS, Load Balancing, SSL, TCP/IP, HTTP.

【For Pay Transparency】Compensation Description (annually)

The base salary range for this position in the selected city is $102400 - $259200 annually. Compensation may vary outside of this range depending on a number of factors, including a candidate’s qualifications, skills, competencies and experience, and location. Base pay is one part of the Total Package that is provided to compensate and recognize employees for their work, and this role may be eligible for additional discretionary bonuses/incentives, and restricted stock units.
