Electrical Transit System Mechanic - San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency (7371) - (T00101)

Under general supervision, the Electrical Transit System Mechanic performs skilled journey-level mechanical, electronic and electrical work in connection with the maintenance and repair of electrically powered transit equipment and vehicles (including, but not limited to: trolley coaches, street cars, light rail vehicles and cable cars). Performs related duties as required.

Essential Duties:
According to Civil Service Commission Rule 409, the duties specified below are representative of the range of duties assigned to this job code/class and are not intended to be an inclusive list.

  1. Diagnoses, replaces and/or repairs worn or defective electrical, electronic, pneumatic, mechanical, HVAC, or hydraulic equipment/parts on Muni Railway equipment.
  2. Tests, troubleshoots and maintains AC/DC electrical and electronic parts and circuits.
  3. Reads and interprets electric, electronic, pneumatic, and hydraulic schematics.
  4. Inspects electrical, electronic, mechanical, hydraulic or pneumatic equipment and parts.
  5. Safely operates and moves electrical transit equipment for shop work, pull-outs and road testing.
  6. Assigns electrical transit equipment to operations.
  7. Adheres to all Federal, State and local safety standards and regulations.
  8. Makes service calls for emergency road repair.
  9. Maintains shop work area by properly storing equipment and tools.
  10. Generates and maintains appropriate records of road call and vehicle maintenance data.
  11. Notifies supervisor of additional needed repairs and work completed.
  12. Correctly references parts manuals.
  13. Communicates effectively with Central Control, Operations, and others.
  14. Performs related duties and responsibilities as assigned.

How to qualify

Experience:
Four (4) years of verifiable full-time experience as a journey-level mechanic performing troubleshooting, repairs and/or maintenance of electromechanical/electrical/electronic and mechanical systems.

Substitutions (Only one of the following may be applied):
i. Graduation from a trade school or technical school approved by the state’s Department of Education with a major course of study in electromechanical, electrical or electronic technology may substitute for two years of the required experience.
ii. Possession of an A.A. or A.S. degree from an accredited college or university in electromechanical, electrical or electronic technology may substitute for two years of the required experience.

License:
Possession of a valid driver's license at the time of appointment.
