The Energy Storage Engineering Engineer is responsible for planning, leading, and managing the engineering activities of energy storage projects for EDPR utility-scale hybrid renewable (PV/wind) + storage and stand-alone storage projects in the Regions of Iberia, Rest of Europe, South America, and APAC, in coordination with the local Engineering teams. The person in this role will support the technical analysis of projects during the prospecting and due diligence phases of the development cycle and will be responsible for the engineering design of the storage plants, including pre-design, basic design, tendering documentation, and detailed design, and will be supporting the execution phase ensuring quality along the FAT, commissioning, and final testing of the project. Applies the design criteria, specifications, and standards requirements contributing to optimize the projects and their future commercial operation, ensuring the minimization of costs and compliance with deadlines.
MAIN ACCOUNTABILITIES
- DEVELOPMENT ENGINEERING:
- Collaborate closely with various departments including Development, Origination, Procurement, Finance, Energy Assessment, Investment Transactions Engineering, Engineering, and Construction to conduct technical planning and due diligence evaluations.
- Determine optimal energy storage system sizing based on technology, costs, application, contract structure, and other applicable constraints in coordination with the renewable asset design.
- Conceptually design utility-scale energy storage systems and renewable assets + storage that maximizes value for the lifetime cost of the system in coordination with the Regulations and Markets, Energy Storage Analytics Department, and other Technology Units.
- Support local Engineering teams from each of the countries along the preparation of the Basic and Execution Projects to be presented to the different administrative bodies for permitting.
- Perform energy storage degradation and augmentation modeling for multiple technologies in coordination and iteration with various use cases.
- Coordinate and validate with other Technology Units the execution of specific key system studies for the integration of the BESS in the whole project, ensuring compliance with the grid code requirements in the POI.
- Provide the Bill of Quantities and CAPEX estimation for the material execution of the projects and detailed inputs to Regulations and Markets for the project revenues estimation and O&M for OpEx estimation.
- Prepare the tender RfP documents for contracting the specialized external engineering companies for the preparation of the tender projects. Provide support to the Purchasing Department along the company selection and contracting.
- Manage and coordinate with the external engineering firms for preparation of technical projects of the Balance of System (BOS) of BESS, including the needed ground studies and civil design, DC, AC low voltage, MV electrical designs, and communications and control system design, for the energy storage plants, ensuring compliance with the conditions established by the business units, other technical departments, or external agents, to ensure maximum efficiency in the development of such projects.
- Review and evaluate the BOS and BESS integration bidder’s proposals pertaining to energy storage during the course of the BOS and BESS integration company(s) selection, with a tabulation of the received bids in order to ensure the selection of the best final project from the engineering point of view.
- Support the Purchasing Department along the preparations and negotiation of the technical terms and exhibits of the BESS projects Contracts, for Capital Equipment, Balance of System, and System integration, in coordination with other Technology units, Construction, and Operations Department.
Support the review of the detailed engineering packages prepared by the BOS and BESS integration construction companies in collaboration with execution team project engineers, ensuring compliance with the Contract and Tender Project, specifications, and standards, while supporting a value-engineering approach in order to save CAPEX and/or optimize the project schedule.
- Support project Construction team throughout execution of Factory Acceptance Test of the Capital Equipment, site QA/QC plan and IPPs preparation, commissioning, and final testing of the project.
- Lead the transfer of projects to the Construction Team, ensuring full understanding of frontiers and interfaces between Engineering firms, OEMs, Construction, and Integrator companies, to optimize the construction, start times, guaranteeing the coordination and technical quality in the transfer of the project.
- Coordinate the evaluation and resolution of the proposed modifications of the final construction project raised in the construction phase, concluding the learned lessons from the project in order to ensure the maintenance of the technical standards of EDPR.
- Ensure the application of the common standards in the projects, supervising its adaptation to applicable local regulation, in order to avoid non-justified deviations and maximize the investment efficiency with all the technical warranty needed.
- Challenge Technical Standards applicability and verify and justify deviations from them, in order to assure the technical solvency and the technical-economic efficiency of the projects.
- Support the team along the initiatives for the development of creative and innovative engineering processes.
- Assist the E&C standardization team with the development of technical specifications, vendor reviews, supplier qualifications, etc., including testing and commissioning aspects of energy storage projects.
Ensure the coordination of service provision from BESS Technology, Electrical and Control, Cross-Functional Projects, and other Technology teams to the Storage Engineering Team, of specific key studies and technological intel needed during the engineering phase for its integration in the project, to minimize the risk associated with the construction process.
