Your Role

Pay: $85,000 - $105,000 annually DOE

Work Location: Hayward, CA. Must be within commutable distance to our TransPak office.

As a Packaging Design Engineer I with us, you’ll support internal and external customers and their packaging design requirements, including, but not limited to, the accurate collection of information pertaining to customer product and packaging requirements. This includes customer site visits for the accurate recording of product or package information to be used during the creation of clear and detailed CAD renderings and drawings of products or packaging components, support of in-house packaging design document creation and costing. Updating documentation, including modifying, or supporting the modification of existing CAD drawings and files. You will also be required to run tests in our packaging laboratory, including drop, vibration, and incline testing of packages and crates.

What You’ll Be Doing

Focus on Design and Manufacturing Support for Internal and External Customers

  • Work directly with internal and external customers to create material neutral packaging solutions following company, customer, and known industry specifications and standards to prevent damage to customer product within the known distribution environment.
  • Create new or update existing designs to optimize manufacturing efficiency and job costs.
  • Conduct site visits to collect information specific to a required project.
  • Evaluate packaging requirements and provide design solutions based on customer provided inputs (drawings, dimensions, etc.).
  • Interpret written instructions, specifications, and other inputs to create accurate sketches and other manufacturing documentation.
  • Provide drawings and files to customers which include customer corporate branding and follow customer specifications for document control.
  • Review CAD designs with customers to confirm that the provided solution meets all requirements prior to releasing design for manufacturing.
  • Provide CAD and graphics support for the operation of specific equipment, including Kongsberg and Digital printer.
  • Maintain CAD, Graphics and Kongsberg files and assist with the loading of files for manufacturing.
  • Accurately review and document customer provided samples for the purpose of creating all CAD related files.
  • Interact with quality team to assist with the creation of first article inspection forms and documents.
  • Interact with quality team to assist with the creation of manufacturing jigs and templates.
  • Manage multiple projects concurrently, as needed.
  • Independently prioritize projects to ensure on time deliverables.
  • Knowledge of packaging dynamics and cushion design science.
  • Conduct package testing following ISTA or Customer standards.
  • Have knowledge of using accelerometers and data acquisition software.

Create and Update Production Documentation

  • Create new drawings and other information needed for the manufacturing process.
  • Update or modify existing drawings and production documentation, as required.

Participate in Design Reviews

  • Participate in internal design reviews to ensure accuracy of drawings, as well as manufacturability of designs.

What We’d Like to See from You

Required

  • 3-5 years of Packaging Design experience, or BA degree in a packaging related field.
  • Strong problem-solving skills.
  • Good written and verbal communication skills.
  • Basic understanding of standard packaging design and development.
  • Knowledge of protective packaging design (includes crating, foam, and corrugated products).
  • General knowledge of clean room acceptable packaging materials.
  • Able to design solutions specific to customer requirements.
  • Ability to use tape measure and measure accurately.
  • Ability to communicate clearly in English with Customers, Corporate Staff, Sales, Operations, and Customer Service.
  • Able to use a computer and software applications such as MS Office Suite, proprietary estimating software, and CAD, such as SolidWorks and ArtiosCAD.
  • Demonstrate attention to detail, be deadline-driven, with the goal of continuous improvement in skills and abilities.

Highly Desired

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Packaging.
  • Experience providing design support for crating, corrugated and other protective packaging.
  • ISTA testing: Drop, Vibration, Incline, and Compression.
  • General knowledge of packaging dynamics.
  • Understand first article inspection process.
