Job Title: Supervising Substation Engineer
Primary Role:
The Supervising Engineer is fully accountable for the profitability, quality, and schedule performance of their engineering teams. This role involves resource allocation and management within the assigned design teams, ensuring all engineering tasks are completed to meet project goals. Extensive knowledge of substation design and engineering is essential, along with the capability to coordinate multiple project teams towards the completion of concurrent projects.
Duties & Responsibilities:
The Supervising Substation Engineer may be responsible for any of the following:
- Overseeing projects to meet quality, scheduling, and profitability targets
- Supervising multiple project teams to ensure on-time project completion
- Assigning projects based on team availability, project requirements, and deadlines
- Collaborating with project engineers to synchronize efforts with construction and purchasing departments
- Ensuring project standards are met and design progress is efficient
- Coordinating project activities with customer representatives, team members, and management as needed
- Tracking project schedules and budgets, ensuring they remain on target
- Utilizing engineering software for tasks such as ground grid design, relay coordination, transformer sizing, short circuit, and load flow studies
- Providing engineering and design support when necessary to meet project timelines
- Ensuring engineering standards (NEC, NESC, NEMA, IEEE, ANSI) are adhered to
- Maintaining responsible document management practices
- Fostering a sense of ownership and accountability within project team members
- Traveling occasionally, as required by project demands
- Maintaining job safety analysis records
Minimum Qualifications / Experience:
- Bachelor's Degree in Electrical Engineering from an accredited institution
- Licensed Professional Engineer with at least 15 years of industry experience
- If licensed outside the work state, ability to obtain state licensure within a year of hire
- Proficient in both substation engineering and design, with experience overseeing multiple projects
Skills:
- Proven experience in managing a multidisciplinary design team
- Strong understanding of high-voltage substation components (138kV+)
- In-depth knowledge of AC/DC fundamentals and three-phase power systems
- Proficiency in engineering application software
- Familiarity with engineering standards such as NEC, NESC, NEMA, IEEE, ANSI
- Expertise in project design documents and drawings
- Strong leadership in a team environment, effective communication skills, and proficiency with standard office software
