As a seasoned Principal UX Designer you will lead our Design Systems & Operations team. Plain and simple you are a systems thinker and can apply that thinking across all product design teams, brand marketing, merchandising, while supporting multiple product pillars. You are organized and meticulous with your work. You have a propensity for curiosity and are willing to explore new tools, frameworks, and patterns. You are compassionate and understand the importance of accessible and inclusive experiences. You love to get under the hood, find out how things work, and how to make them better. You are a natural born collaborator and listener. In this role you will make technical architecture decisions that will allow our design system to scale and be optimally useful to all consumers. You will define the process for integrating design system components into consuming codebases and the contribution model for other crews to work on design system components. You will work with Design and Product to determine how the design system can best serve prototyping needs. In addition, you work with our design system leads to create a design token infrastructure to aid reusability and scalability of the system. Collaborate directly with the design systems engineering & design leads to shape future evolutions and versions of the system. Finally you will delegate and manage the work of the existing team of 3 designers. We have been building our new design system since 2022. The foundation of our ASTRO Design System has been laid and the excitement grows across our teams to expand and deepen existing adoption with a new leader.
- Set vision, manage, and oversee design ops team and design system work tracks.
- Set measurable goals and priorities for design system initiatives and report status to leadership, stakeholders and present it during our QBR.
- Act as a bridge between the design, engineering, and product management teams on key initiatives.
- Provide consultation, guidance, and education to the design department on how to apply best practices with regard to accessibility, ux patterns, and design system tools.
- Update and maintain asset production standards, naming conventions, design tokens, and UI component libraries in partnership with engineers.
- Design, maintain, and publish ux patterns and usage guidelines on design system documentation website.
- Organize Figma workflows, templates, and best practices.
- Maintain and expand our elegant, high quality, and accessible design system, staying connected to engineering, for all our product pillars.
- Partner closely with our design leaders to ensure strategic vision is executed within given timelines and design quality standards.
- Identifying and tracking the success of the system, usage and engagement across product teams.
- Lead the evangelizing of the Design System across the org.
- Collaborate with IC designers, content strategists, researchers, brand marketing & merchandising.
- Identify team needs with regards to process, tools, documentation, asset management, etc.
- Balance multiple inputs of priorities and needs, making sure inter-dependencies are understood and planned for effectively.
- Craft and manage schedules for contributors to the design system.
- Manage the work of your team.
What You’ll Need to Be Successful
- Proficient in best practices in building flexible components using auto layout and properties.
- Minimum 3 years previous experience working with design systems.
- Experience working with brand teams and incorporating brand language within design systems.
- Proficient organizing and publishing libraries.
- Figma Pro in design systems and components.
- Ability to lead and drive blank-slate as well as existing and ongoing work with engineering and design partners.
- Deep understanding for user experience and accessibility requirements and guidelines.
- Understanding of design quality, product strategy and product/design development process.
- Thrive in connecting others and building trust across partner teams product, design and engineering.
- Strong verbal, presentation, and written communication skills.
- Strong conflict resolution and negotiation skills.
- Ability to manage in an environment of ambiguity with diverse partners.
- Ability to work across multiple complex programs & teams.
- Bring fundamental knowledge of CSS and JS to the table. Understanding what under the hood of a component can be a very valuable asset to your engineering partners and also help identify issues or bugs with a component’s DNA.
- Experience with Token Studio plugin for Figma
Work Arrangement

Metro Areas of Boston, District of Columbia, Los Angeles, San Francisco, Seattle and New York City pay range:
$169,382-$338,765
