The Vice President of Digital Engineering leads the Digital Engineering organization within Maximus Digital Solutions to deliver cutting-edge technology solutions that provide simple and delightful experiences to customers in and outside of Maximus.
As a key member of the Digital Solutions leadership team, this leader will align, develop, and guide the team on tangible outcomes that impact our employees, customers, and clients. We seek a dynamic and experienced technology expert accustomed to empowering teams that can execute a comprehensive digital vision and strategy in a global organization and across time zones. The candidate will have a significant role in executing our digital vision and strategy, making a meaningful impact on the business and culture of our organization along the way.
This critical leadership role is based out of our Princeton, New Jersey, office location and is expected to be in the office 3 or more days a week to collaborate in-person with the team and other leaders. This leadership role will also require periodic travel, sometimes with limited notice, to our Tysons Corner, VA, USA headquarters as well as satellite locations within the United States, Canada, United Kingdom, and India.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
- Define and promote future technology and innovation strategy.
- Drive innovative ideas, solutions, and products through leadership and decisive action and define solutions, pricing, and shape competitive positioning.
- Responsible for creating strategic direction for assigned suborganization based on corporate and department strategy.
- Develop, implement, and maintain budgetary and resource allocation plans.
- Perform quality reviews for large-scale initiatives and programs that involve multiple functional and technical components and/or teams.
- Communicate and influence senior executive leadership, stakeholders, vendors, and clients.
- Responsible for professional development by providing coaching and identifying new opportunities for growth for direct reports.
- Responsible for team management, which includes resource forecasting, making decisions regarding hiring, promotions, and terminations, and performance management. Oversee and work with 3rd party vendors.
- Produce high-quality executive-ready messaging in the form of presentations, briefs, and memos.
- Create and negotiate contract and commercial agreements.
- Lead multiple teams of directors/senior managers, and managers.
The Vice President of Digital Engineering is ultimately accountable and with the help of their management team, responsible for:
- the assignment and deployment of staff to customer projects
- the quality of work performed by staff when they are deployed to both internal and customer projects and engagements
- the proactive response of staff to customer needs
- prompt resolution of escalations
- the proactive adjustment of staff and staffing levels to align with business needs
- the setting of and adherence to a fiscal plan that enables all of the preceding.
- Bachelor's degree in related field required.
- Minimum of 15 years of related professional experience required.
This role requires expertise in four key areas:
- Technical Delivery: The Digital Engineering organization comprises Software Engineering, DevOps, Quality Assurance, and Quality Engineering functions. It’s scope spans a broad range of products and technology solutions including but not limited to: internally productized n-tier enterprise applications, native mobile apps, middleware, webchat, 1-way sms, 2-way sms, email marketing, low-code, digital signatures, robotic process automation, analytics. Many of these products and solutions incorporate elements of machine learning and artificial intelligence. This leader should feel equally comfortable across a broad spectrum of responsibility: Ranging from using their own technical skill set to assist team members in solving delivery problems, to presenting complex technical concepts in the board room.
- Leadership and Management: This role sets the tone for their organization with an emphasis on participating in the delivery of technical solutions to customers and maintaining a culture of learning and creativity for a team that can flex between 50 and 100 including skilled technical managers and individual contributors with substantial portfolios and expertise. Staff will be comprised of FTEs and contractors inside and outside the US with a large presence in India. This role is expected to deftly navigate a complex organization with a broad range of stakeholders. This role must anticipate the potential needs of stakeholders and be ready and prepared to address them. Where surprises emerge, they need to think on their feet and provide satisfying answers in the moment, with room for follow-up as needed.
- Collaboration and Impact: The Vice President of Digital Engineering, their management team, and their organization maintain a strong and collaborative relationship with the Vice President of Architecture, the Vice President of Delivery, and their teams for all internal and customer-facing work. This leader should excel working in a matrixed organization where influence and collaboration are essential to performance and delivery.
- Business Operations and Financial Acumen: The ideal candidate must be equally comfortable with navigating direct management and matrixed management of staff while balancing their practice staffing levels against both customer and financial commitments. The Digital Engineering organization works in a dual operating model: Some of the team’s work (approximately 20 to 30%) is a centrally funded technology function (e.g.: Product Development, DevOps, Standards, etc.) and is led out of the Digital Engineering organization. The majority of the team’s work (70 to 80%) is funded by customer engagements (e.g. implementations and O&M), consists of being deployed to matrixed teams that deliver professional services for our customers, is typically customer-facing and is led and managed in a matrixed fashion by our Delivery organization.

Must be eligible to work in the US for any company without sponsorship, including participation on projects for the United States Federal Government which may require the acquisition of a security clearance or suitability assessment.

Pay Transparency
Maximus compensation is based on various factors including but not limited to job location, a candidate's education, training, experience, expected quality and quantity of work, required travel (if any), external market and internal value analysis including seniority and merit systems, as well as internal pay alignment. Annual salary is just one component of Maximus's total compensation package. Other rewards may include short- and long-term incentives as well as program-specific awards. Additionally, Maximus provides a variety of benefits to employees, including health insurance coverage, life and disability insurance, a retirement savings plan, paid holidays and paid time off. Compensation ranges may differ based on contract value but will be commensurate with job duties and relevant work experience. An applicant's salary history will not be used in determining compensation. Maximus will comply with regulatory minimum wage rates and exempt salary thresholds in all instances.
