Principal Structural Design Engineer

Our client headquartered in Virginia is seeking a Principal Structural Design Engineer based in Huntsville, AL. The position reports to the Manager of Engineering and offers a hybrid workplace with two remote days. The Principal Structural Design Engineer will provide missile airframe engineering leadership and serve as a technical expert for missile and projectile airframe designs.

The ideal candidate has proven expertise in aerodynamic design and simulation with weapons systems. Possesses effective technical writing, presentation and communication skills.

Duties/Responsibilities:

• Design and modify missile airframe structures
• Perform analysis of airframe and lead design reviews
• Utilize tools to design, refine and analyze aerodynamic performance
• Responsible for all aspects of interfaces to host platforms or howitzers
• Perform test and tracking of Weight, Center of Gravity (CG) and Moment of Inertia (MOI)
• Achieve technical, program/system requirements and customer compliance milestones throughout the product development cycle
• Conduct trade studies for the development and optimization of airframe concepts and architectures in support of new and existing programs

Skills/Requirements:

• Aerodynamics engineering expertise
• Proficient with CAD models, particularly with airframes
• Aerospace structural design and analysis experience (preferably Missile / Projectile / Railgun / Flight Vehicle / Supersonic / Hypersonic)
• Metallic and composite materials knowledge
• MATLAB, Python, C++ or other high-level programming language
• Exposure to CFD modeling software
• Abaqus FEA a plus

Qualifications:

• 12+ Years of experience in Aerodynamics
• 10+ Years of CAD, preferably Siemens NX or Catia V5
• 2+ Years of Computational Fluid Dynamics simulation and analysis
• Bachelor’s degree from accredited four-year College or University in Engineering, preferably Aerospace, Aeronautical, Aerodynamics or Mechanical Engineering (Master’s or PhD a plus)
• Must be US Citizen and eligible to obtain US DoD Secret Clearance (active clearance a plus)
