The Department of Laboratory Medicine & Pathology has an outstanding opportunity open for a Temporary Research Scientist/Engineer 3. The Research Scientist/Engineer 3 manages a number of clinical research projects, applying ddPCR/pCR assays to identify viral strains and diversity in study samples, HSV and SARS-CoV-2 Clinical trials and other projects.
Developmental Duties (35%):
- Develop and validate new assays for diagnostic needs and research protocols.
- Adopt new, unique procedures and technologies to fulfill the needs of individual studies.
Analytical/Operational Duties (45%):
- Perform different technologies on different types of study samples according to the study needs, analyze the experimental results and determine the follow-up experiments.
- Perform and improve procedures of the technologies currently used in the lab, including real-time PCR, digital droplet PCR, and more.
- Maintain complete and accurate records and document all changes.
- Write and update standard operating procedures for laboratory personnel.
- Perform assays accurately, track the progress of studies, and ensure all deadlines are met.
- Conduct data analysis and interpretation for grant submission and publication.
- Participate in all laboratory maintenance and inventory duties.
- Follow QA/QC policies and report all operation deviations.
Leadership/Supervisory Duties (20%):
- Train newly hired employees and students.
- Delegate work when appropriate; consult with supervisor regarding workload management.
- Act as a role model/mentor to new employees and students.
Minimum Qualifications:
Bachelor’s Degree in Molecular Biology or related field AND Four (4) years of experience OR equivalent combination of education AND experience.
Specific knowledge, skills and abilities required:
- Experience in primer/probe design for PCR, collaborative project design, and understanding of basic viral biology.
- Strong written and communication skills.
- Ability to problem solve and troubleshoot.
Desirable Qualifications:
- Highly organized with knowledge of laboratory working environments.
- Previous experience in PCR and droplet digital PCR is desirable.
- Good Clinical Laboratory Practice (GCLP) skills.
