A Mechanical Lab Testing Engineer in Research and Development (R&D) is primarily responsible for carrying out detailed, highly technical research and development according to a set of objectives provided by management. The position is responsible for providing input on objectives and goals by the relevant group leader and helps plan problem solving strategies, conducts formulation research, measures fundamental properties of chemical, material, and physical systems, analyzes data, and provides technical reports and other documentation of development activities. The position is accountable for delivery of specific objectives for projects in a professional and timely manner as detailed by their supervisor. This position also plays a central role in supporting translation of technologies developed within R&D into the manufacturing implementation stage.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Implement research of materials development activities in accordance with defined external research and development contract deliverables, or internal project requirements.
  • Designs, develops, implements and analyzes technical products or processes at bench level or in scale-up activity.
  • Write technical reports on activities and deliver documents in a timely fashion to their supervisor.
  • Design and implement test procedures, materials testing qualifications, and test databases.
  • Characterize gel and aerogel mechanical properties.
  • Communicate with program or project customer regularly to ensure accuracy of design goals, provide regular progress updates and lay the foundation for successful completion of the program/project, in the eyes of the customer.
  • Support activities intended to document materials design and process development activities to satisfy relevant elements of ISO 9000:2001.
  • Support patent application submissions via provision of detailed technical documentation to supervisor and the Intellectual Property Manager.
  • Utilize safe work practices and participate in all available safety training programs.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned by management.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Bachelor's Degree (BA) from four-year college or university in Engineering/Material Science, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Minimum 3-5 years in R&D Laboratory
  • Experience with Aerogel materials or processing methods a plus.
  • Experience in running analytical instrumentation and analyzing results also a plus.
  • Experience with sol-gel processing and aerogel processing techniques a strong plus.
  • Computer skills required: Microsoft Office Suite. Shimadzu (Trapezium X) and Instron (Blue Hill Universal) is a plus.
  • Strong communication skills.

  • Continually works near moving mechanical parts.
  • Occasionally works around fumes, airborne particles, or toxic chemicals.
  • While performing the duties of this job, the noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.
  • The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds.
  • Frequently required to use hand tools such as calipers.
