Hybrid: This position does not require an employee to be on-site full-time to perform most effectively. However, this position requires an employee to be on-site to support team activities.

The Team:

The VMEC (Vehicle Mechatronic Embedded Controls) team is comprised of inclusive and diverse Agile teams, where everyone has a voice in the conversation. Our Software Development process translates Customer requirements into designs, creates code, executes testing, and then integrates our solutions into reality. We are currently looking for candidates to fill Scrum Leader roles.

Domain: Electrification Propulsion - Controls design focused on optimizing system operation to maximize range and drivability of electrified vehicles.

The Role:

We are seeking creative, highly motivated, agile thinkers with passion and expertise in controls and software and with great attention to detail. The selected candidate will lead a scrum team (9-12 engineers) in designing and implementing technical software solutions for VMEC features utilizing lean-agile methodologies and appropriate processes and methods, and lead the growth in capability of controls methods to keep General Motors at the technological forefront. In the role of Scrum Lead, you will manage the team’s workload and capacity, collaborate with multiple areas of the business, and guide the team’s collective work output, innovation, and growth.

What You'll Do (Responsibilities):

  • Be the lean-agile leader and coach for an Agile Team on Agile Release Train (ART).
  • Plan and manage the team’s workload and capacity, including developers – SW Engineers (SWE) and Controls Design Engineers (CDE) – and Sub-System Lead Engineers (SSLEs).
  • Coordinate testing workload with SW Quality Assurance Engineers and SQAT scrum team.
  • Facilitate the teams Agile ceremonies including daily standups, iteration review, iteration planning, and their retrospectives.
  • Attend and actively engage in the Scrum of Scrums, and Scrum Lead Community of Practice.
  • Prepare the team and assist the RTE with PI Planning, System Demos, and Inspect & Adapt workshop.
  • Owner and creator of the Teams’ Kanban board to help the team complete their committed work.
  • Mentor the other scrum members and grow their expertise through diverse opportunities.
  • Keep the pulse on the team and make sure the needs of the team are met to enable them to be most effective.
  • Focus the team on completing their team PI Objectives with quality.
  • Continuously challenge the team’s normal ways of development to improve areas of quality, predictability, flow, and velocity.
  • Lead the team to relentlessly improve through education and innovation. The scrum lead may jump start this activity.
  • Proactively look to remove impediments and identify dependencies to support in cross scrum or cross ART collaboration for the team.
  • Work closely with the Product Owner and support backlog activities.
  • Escalate problems to the right people at the right time, but only after the team’s internal attempts have failed.
  • Perform design, build and test of software product up to 50% of the time.
  • Guide the team on Built in Quality initiatives, Software Quality and Process, and hold team accountable to meeting those deliverables.
  • Utilize automated test tools in build environments, benches, and vehicles to verify functionality at the Function, Controller and System level.
  • Coordinate and collaborate with departments outside engineering, such as Systems & Safety Engineering, Electrical Architecture, Calibration and Vehicle Performance.
  • Responsible for leading a complex or large project team of scrum members (10+).
  • Expected to support second dimension assignment in a leadership role.

Required Skills and Experience:

  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Computer Science or other applicable Engineering focuses.
  • Minimum 5+ years of experience with proven technical and professional skills in job-related area required.
  • Proficient in C or C++.
  • Scaled Agile or Agile experience.
  • Experience in model-based development (Matlab/Simulink).
  • Experience in plant modeling and analysis tools (MIL, SIL, or HIL Testing).

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Master's degree in Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Computer Science or other applicable Engineering focuses with 5+ years of experience.
  • Coach level expertise in C or C++ for embedded platforms.
  • Experience with Jira and Git Ecosystem.
  • In-depth knowledge of Algorithm & Software development and calibration of vehicle motion controls.
  • Understanding of GM Vehicle Development Process.
  • Knowledge in electrification and diagnostics.
  • Extensive experience with software development and testing.
